Toddler Chokes on Hair Clip During Nap

A Toddler Almost Died From Choking on This Common Household Item During a Nap

Rebecca Fitzgerald, a mother from New Zealand, had the scare of a lifetime after her toddler-aged daughter, Charli, began violently choking on a hair clip during naptime. After putting Charli down for some shuteye, Rebecca heard her little one struggling to breathe on the baby monitor. The culprit? A plastic hair clip the mom had used to hold her baby's pigtails earlier that day. Rebecca explained just how scary the incident was in an interview with 1 News Now.

"We were out for the morning and drove home. She fell asleep so I transferred her straight into her cot. And she woke up and I could hear her on the monitor. And then she just went quiet," explained Rebecca. "She just stared at me just vacant and just trying to gasp for air. And she was just really floppy, no noise, just every now and then you would hear this gurgle which meant then there was a tiny bit of air getting in, but obviously just not enough."

After realizing what was happening, she called an ambulance and ran outside screaming trying to flag down a neighbor to help, but no one heard her. Fortunately, the paramedics arrived just in time and were able to suction the hair clip out of the back of Charli's throat. We're happy she's OK, but talk about a close call.

If you see any young children choking, pick them up and rest them on your leg and make sure their heads are tipped forward and facing down. Then give them five strong pats in between their shoulder blades to dislodge anything that's stuck in their windpipes.
