Everything You Need to Know About We Rock the Spectrum, the Sensory-Based Gyms Designed For Kids

We Rock The Spectrum (WRTS) kid's gyms have been popping up all over the country recently. These gyms are designed for children on the autism spectrum, using their unique sensory and therapy equipment to help them (and all children) with neurological growth and development. Also, they're really fun! These amazing gyms include suspended swings, crash mats and pillows, zip lines, trampolines, and play structures. They also have sensory-based and fine motor toys available, as well as an arts and crafts area.

POPSUGAR chatted with the gym's CEO and founder, Dina Kimmel, about the importance of opening up WRTS around the country (and the world). It's Personal For CEO and Founder, Dina Kimmel

WRTS was created by Dina Kimmel, a mother who "gets it." After becoming discouraged because her son with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) and SPD (Sensory Processing Disorder) often had meltdowns and tantrums at gyms and play spaces because the overstimulation would be too much for him, she decided to do something about it. She soon realized how beneficial occupational therapy equipment was for her son and wanted to pay it forward to her community by offering a safe and fun environment with the same type of equipment at an affordable price (open play costs $14 per child).

All Children Are Welcome

Whether they're on the spectrum or not, all children are welcome at WRTS. "You'll be surprised to see what an organic play environment can do for all children," Kimmel says, adding that many people are amazed by how well special needs children and neurotypical children play together and form friendships.

"Each WRTS has 10 specialized pieces of equipment that work on the bodies' sensory system, which is an essential part for kids on the spectrum," Kimmel says. This equipment, which is also great fun for neurotypical children, includes suspended swings, climbing structures, and safe landing places.

They Have Professionally Trained Staff

Your children are definitely in good hands at WRTS. "Our team is trained for 40 hours of 'in the gym' hands-on time with the kiddos," Kimmel says. "Safety is the most important part to running a successful We Rock The Spectrum." Many staff members either have experience working with children with special needs or are actually parents of children with special needs!

Your Kid Needs a Break? No Problem!

If a child is experiencing sensory overload, having a meltdown, or simply needs a break, WRTS staff will bring the child into a Calming Room. These special rooms offer softer lighting, as well as sensory-safe chairs and toys. "We want parents to know that we are there for them and also use these moments to educate the neurotypical public as well," Kimmed adds.

You Never Have to Say "I'm Sorry"

WRTS has a slogan for parents: "You never have to say 'I'm sorry.'" At WRTS, there is no judgment or shaming at all. Kimmel says, "When a special needs family sees our slogan, they immediately feel understood and at home."

They Have Birthday Party Packages

It can be tough for families of children with special needs to pick a venue for a birthday party. Most kid party places are way too overstimulating and overwhelming. At WRTS, the well-trained staff knows exactly how to put a smile on your child's face and make sure they have the best birthday ever.

Kids Can Make Lasting Memories

Kids Can Make Lasting Memories

At WRTS, children form beautiful friendships and make many wonderful memories. Kimmel recalls one of her favorite memories that involved her own son at WRTS (warning: have a tissue box nearby): "I witnessed our son, Gabriel, talking to another kiddo on the spectrum (who was nonverbal), and he told him, 'Don't worry, Mikey. I will help you. I have autism too.' I was bawling happy tears and so proud of how far he has come. Gabriel would not be the amazing boy he is today without having access to the equipment at WRTS on a daily basis."
