Only Lizzo Could Pull Off a Wedding Dress With Stockings and Combat Boots

Lizzo might have teased her "2 Be Loved (Am I Ready)" music video in a somewhat simple wedding dress with lace sleeves and a cutout back from David's Bridal, but the "Special" singer revealed a much more expressive wardrobe upon the featurette's debut on Monday, Aug. 15. Styled by Brett Alan Nelson and codirected by Lizzo and Christian Breslauer, the video introduces the global pop star at her wedding ceremony as a play off her "Truth Hurts" video, taking fans back in time. Here, she wears a tearaway iteration of her "Truth Hurts" gown (both looks were created by tailor Seth Pratt) with poofy half-mesh sleeves, cold shoulders, and a lace-trimmed neckline. But the wrap-effect skirt gets increasingly dramatic, giving way to a thigh-high slit.

"The dress symbolizes her shredding layers of her self doubt and expanding on her love for herself, so she can truly fall in love," Nelson tells POPSUGAR via email.

Lizzo plays up the slit with white stockings pulled over the knee and custom Steve Madden lug-sole combat boots with three embellished buckles, a nod to her personal style, which almost always includes a touch of edge. While her bridal ensemble is finished with a tulle veil from Seth Pratt and an ornate flower headband found by Nelson at Santee Alley in downtown LA, her vintage YSL cat-eye sunglasses bring a playful and retro twist. They complement her bridesmaids' powder-blue '60s-inspired shifts, accessorized with diamond choker necklaces and hairstyles big on volume.

"The dress symbolizes her shredding layers of her self doubt."

While we see Lizzo pick up a pair of fur-trimmed Pleaser mules in her hotel room, she eventually ditches her wedding dress entirely, trading it in for a deconstructed silver chain-mail set dripping in sparkly beads, rhinestones, diamonds, and chains. These coords, a collaboration between Nelson and Michael Schmidt Studios, were meant to be a crystalized "mirage" of the wedding dress, according to Nelson. They are completed with matching boots and fingerless gloves, making for a disco-era surprise at the reception, which feels like a happy celebration of Lizzo's full-circle moment. Fittingly, Lizzo's white mesh briefs also take the spotlight in the finale, which is perhaps a subtle nod to all her success launching her Yitty shapewear brand.

Ahead, watch the music video in full and enjoy a breakdown of the key fashion moments.
