It would be nearly impossible for me to pick just one reason to love fall. But, coming in easily within the top three reasons is that crisp fall weather. In fact, I dare say that if you were to ask me my favorite season, I'd simply reply: sweater weather. It's not so much that I love the weather itself (although a reprieve from summer heat is nice), it's more that I love how fall allows me to change up my wardrobe and layer my favorite pieces so I'm always comfortable, whether I'm commuting to work, working out, or heading to the trails.

The key to a perfectly layered fall look always begins with a classic base layer. From there, I'm able to build my entire look around this one piece. And what's even better, I'm able to inject even more versatility into my look by mixing and matching the pieces I use with my base layer.

As I prep my perfect fall look, I've spotted 10 pieces from Athleta that make for ideal base layers to build any outfits around.

Momentum Seamless Top

Ideal for workouts, trail walks, or lounging, the Momentum Seamless Top ($25–$79, originally $79) features a seamless construction. This makes it both ideal to avoid chafing and for wearing under your favorite cardigan.

Renew Seamless Racerback Tank

If I were to pick one item that's just about essential for layering, it would be a tank such as the Renew Seamless Racerback Tank ($20–$49, originally $49). I love how this classic ribbed tank can work solo for workouts or pair nicely with my favorite fall shacket for a cozier vibe.

Ascent Seamless Top

One of the major reasons I love fall is because it means I can comfortably work out outside again. I'm eyeing the Ascent Seamless Top ($89) as the ideal trail top. With sporty thumbholes, a fitted construction, and wool–nylon blend, this top is great for adding in an extra layer of warmth during those crisp fall hikes.

Uptempo Elevate Tank

Uptempo Elevate Tank

The Uptempo Elevate Tank ($55) has versatility written all over it. Thanks to a brush tech jersey fabric, I'm looking to a tank like this to go from morning yoga practice to the office. I can already see this breezy piece pairing well with my favorite tights and structured blazer.

Aurora Seamless Crop Rib Tank

Aurora Seamless Crop Rib Tank

The Aurora Seamless Crop Rib Tank ($20–$44, originally $44) is made for the yogi on the go. This ribbed, breathable tank doubles as a supportive and comfortable workout top. But I'm loving how the rich plum color and deep neckline allow it to be truly activity versatile. Pair with a breezy button up for post-yoga brunch or a hoodie for the commute home — this tank can work with both.

Elemental Tee

Elemental Tee

Thanks to a nice and loose fit, the Elemental Tee ($65) is both breathable and airy. With ionic+™ technology in the fabric to help eliminate odor before it starts, this tee is making my list for sure. Whether I'm taking a jog and toss a hoodie over or pair this piece with my denim jacket, I'm sold on the layering options here.

Revolve Seamless Cami

Revolve Seamless Cami

Just hearing the word cami brings back memories of high school when I was a layering master thanks to my spaghetti strap tops. But the Revolve Seamless Cami ($23–$55, originally $55) is far from the cami of my youth. This ribbed heathered cami blends my favorite summertime crop with my favorite winter sweater. This option itself works well as an undershirt for a slouchy cardigan, blazer, zip-up or more. What's even better: it goes with any tight, pant, or skirt imaginable.

Outbound Tank

Outbound Tank

The Outbound Tank ($59) features a slouchy fit and subtle turtle-neck, and a color that works well for comfy commuting and travel. What I'm liking best about this breathable, lightweight Supima cotton tank, though, is that it pairs with bike shorts for a HIIT class or flared trousers for dinner time. What's more, it works great solo, with a sweater, with a jacket, or even under a button up.

Foresthill Ascent Seamless Tank

Foresthill Ascent Seamless Tank

Although the Foresthill Ascent Seamless Tank ($24–$59, originally $59) has a close-to-skin fit, it still remains light and breathable for daily comfort. Plus, the mesh detailing on the back provides cooling airflow, so you're comfortable no matter how you style this tank. For me, that cooling feature will come in handy during my favorite fall activities where I'm geared up in my favorite plaid shacket and scarf.

Aurora Seamless High Neck Crop Tank

Aurora Seamless High Neck Crop Tank

Thanks to its slightly higher neckline, the Aurora Seamless High Neck Crop Tank ($55) makes for a great base layer for fall. I like how it fits close to the body like an undershirt but delivers a dose of style on its own thanks to floral detailing.
