Crumbs Bake Shop Closes

Apparently, We Aren't Over Cupcakes Yet

Don't shell out $250 for a Crumbs cupcake on eBay just yet. It seems Crumbs Bake Shop might be getting an infusion of cash from an investment group interested in acquiring the chain.

Crumbs, famous for its massive — frankly horrifying — $4 cupcakes, shuttered all of its 65 locations this Monday. The bakery's Twitter feed is eerily silent, and it appears that little to no fans are airing their grievances. Amateur Gourmet's Adam Roberts tweeted a perfect summation: "Heartbroken to hear that Crumbs is closing in New York. And by heartbroken I mean totally, utterly ambivalent. #mediocrecupcakes."

But the Crumbs drama could signal a larger story at play. The cupcake market has obviously reached a point of oversaturation. Now that you can get a cupcake as easily as a Starbucks latte, has the world grown weary of these overly frosted, overly sprinkled treats? According to Google, nothing, not whoopie pies, cake pops, macarons, or gourmet doughnuts, has even marginally compared to cupcakes in terms of search popularity, even to this day. However, you be the judge. Are you over cupcakes?
