My mother, who is half Cuban, recommended this book to me because she said it accurately displays the "Cuban mindset"-- most likely because her mother grew up during the time the book is set. This is definitely one of the more emotional reads I've come across. The books is extremely graphic in its expression of character's identity crises, alteration of reality, and mental illness. The Del Pino family and their experiences are so interconnected, yet this seems to be what prevents them from staying together as one strong unit. I found it interesting how this book touched on characters expressing severe signs of mental illness--that no one quite acknowledges as mental illness-- because my Cuban side of the family also has a history of suffering from mental illness. It's a challenging novel to get through because of the many serious subjects it talks about, but definitely a must read for anyone interested in Cuban history or life during the rise of Fidel Castro. ✨✨ #latinx #latinos #latina #bookstagram #cuba #latinxscreate #lit #fridakahlo #tbr #booklover #flowers #comolaflor #bookish #bibliophile #diverseathon #bookstagramfeature A post shared by Sabrina 🌺NYC 🌺🇵🇷🇨🇺🇮🇹 (@latinxreads) on Jan 25, 2017 at 4:35pm PST Share This Link Copy ← Use Arrow Keys → 4 Previous Next Start Slideshow BooksSocial Media
