Romeo Santos delivered a heartfelt speech at the 2020 Billboard Latin Music Awards on Oct. 21. The so-called king of bachata accepted the award for album of the decade for his 2014 release Formula, Vol. 2, which included hits like "Eres Mía" and "Propuesta Indecente."
"To be Latino is an honor."
Santos said, "Whenever I'm preparing an album, my objectives are the same: how can I surprise my fans? How can I continue to enrich my genre?" Santos went on to reflect on his collaboration with Usher on his debut album, and how he would go on to get Drake and Nicki Minaj to actually sing in Spanish in separate appearance on Formula, Vol. 2. On the success of subsequent crossover collaborations, like "Despacito," Santos said, "That fills me with pride . . . It gives me the impression that I'm not alone — that many Latinos understand that our culture, our essence, is very cool — because to be Latino is an honor, it truly is."
