Do you remember the last time you told someone off? I mean truly gave someone a profanity-laced piece of your mind and felt absolutely no guilt about it? For some people, swearing is still considered taboo. It is seen as offensive language, vulgar and disrespectful because of societal rules on what is deemed as proper etiquette. That ideology goes against evidence researchers at Marist College in New York found in a study that shows people who swear are actually smarter than people who don't frequently use swear words. So the next time you think about judging someone for casually dropping an F-bomb, think again. Keep reading to find out five benefits of swearing that will convince you to drop a f*ck or two in the New Year.
1. It relieves stress.
The next time you stub your toe on the side of your bed, feel free to let out a "sh*t", "f*ck", or "b*tch." Seriously. Psychologists have discovered that swearing relieves pain. This works in conjunction with our bodies' natural fight-or-flight response to upsetting or frightening situations. The physiological reaction produces an increase in adrenaline, which dulls the pain we're experiencing in that moment and allows us to focus on another emotion, such as aggression or frustration, instead.
2. It's a great way to express yourself.
If you're having a sh*tty day, you might not be able to find a nicer way to describe how you feel. That's where swear words come in handy. If you're ever struggling to find the right filler word, don't be afraid to use in a swear word instead. They make for great substitutes to let out your true emotions.
3. It's one way to get your point across nonviolently.
Sticks and stones may break your bones . . . you know how the rest of that saying goes. Swearing might be the exception to that rule. If someone tries to cause you harm or disrespects you, using profanity is a great, nonviolent way to let that person know you are not to be f*cked with.
4. It adds color to any conversation.
Think about most of the great comedians you love. Many of them prefer to use expletives during their hilarious stand-up shows. Why? Because it just makes a story more interesting! There's still a certain shock value that comes with swearing that will guarantee undivided attention you otherwise wouldn't get.
5. It just f*cking feels good!
