Here's What Hillary Clinton Was Doing Around the Same Time Trump Criticized Meryl Streep

Hillary Clinton spent her Sunday receiving a standing ovation at the closing show of The Color Purple on Broadway in New York City. How did Donald Trump spend his Sunday? Likely seething at Meryl Streep's Golden Globes speech, which took down the president-elect for his disturbing rhetoric. A few hours after her speech, Trump told The New York Times that he was "not surprised" that he had come under attack from "liberal movie people" — then on Monday morning, he sent off a series of tweets calling Streep "overrated" and a "Hillary flunky who lost big."

While Trump showed a lack of appreciation for artists, Clinton was flooded with cheers from the Color Purple cast and audience members. "There's a lot of really awesome famous and notable people here today," actress Patrice Covington said to the crowd, according to Salon. "I'm not going to call all of them out — I know you already know them." Covington then reportedly waved in Clinton's direction, prompting applause. The crowd also reportedly chanted, "We love you, Hillary," and "God bless you."

Cynthia Erivo, who won the Tony Award for best actress for her role in The Color Purple, tweeted a photo of her backstage with Hillary, Bill, and Chelsea Clinton.

Clinton's reception is in stark contrast to how Mike Pence was received when he went to see Hamilton in November. The cast delivered a powerful message to the vice president-elect, who was greeted with a chorus of boos from the audience. Trump, of course, couldn't keep shut about that either.
