There are a handful of great modern mysteries that exist in our society, such as is Tupac still alive? Are Khloé Kardashian and OJ Simpson related? Are cats spies sent to Earth by aliens? And while we may never get to the bottom of any of these, this week we finally did get an answer to one of the great mysteries of 2017: what was in the Tiffany box that Melania Trump gave Michelle Obama at Trump's inauguration and why it made Obama grimace.
The handing over of the robin egg blue box was met with a now-iconic unimpressed smirk that seemed to represent America's feelings about the Trumps. Naturally, the image went down in meme history, and the former first lady noted her reaction was more about nostalgia and holding back tears than her feelings about the new president. Still, she never mentioned what was in the box.
A year after the incident, the truth was finally revealed — all thanks to Ellen DeGeneres. The comedian and chat host invited Obama to her show as a part of her two-hour 60th birthday celebration episode, and while the show naturally focuses on DeGeneres, it also marks Obama's first television appearance since leaving the White House last year. DeGeneres used the opportunity to ask a tough question: "So, what was in there?"
After a brief laugh, Obama declared to the world that, "It was a lovely frame." The reveal inspired a play-by-play of the moment, and Obama noted that Donald Trump's leaving Melania behind by the car was part of the protocol of a state visit, and that the gift was a surprising break in said protocol (a now unsurprising fact, given Mr. Trump's unpredictable presidency).
"What am I supposed to do with this gift?" Obama recalled. "And everyone cleared out and no one would come and take the box. And I'm thinking do we take the picture with . . . ?" Thankfully, former President Barack Obama "saved the day," according to the former first lady, grabbing the box and placing it back inside — thus ending the high-profile awkwardness. Case closed!
