Who Does Donald Trump Follow on Twitter?
The 7 Kinds of People Donald Trump Follows on Twitter
![]()
The internet lit itself up earlier this year over speculation that Donald Trump had abruptly unfollowed Kellyanne Conway on Twitter — but the truth was he'd never followed her in the first place. (He added her shortly after the public dust-up.) If it seems odd that our most Twitter-obsessed commander in chief of all time wasn't even following his very own counselor to the president, well, it is. But it might be less surprising when you consider that for all of his 27.1 million followers, Trump follows a scant 43 Twitter accounts — and those accounts happen to land neatly in seven different categories. Here's how they break down:
12 are right-wing media accounts
The Drudge Report. Ann Coulter. Fox & Friends. If the news and pundits Trump chooses to follow on Twitter are reflective of his overall media diet, the information he consumes is about as diverse as the nutrients in his fast-food-laden meals.
9 are employees, close advisers, or surrogates
Kellyanne Conway is, indeed, on Trump's current follow list. So is Vice President Mike Pence, his attorney Michael Cohen, and two Trump surrogates named Katrina — Pierson, who served as a campaign spokesperson for Trump, and Campins, who appeared on the first season of The Apprentice. Campins works for Trump Real Estate and was a Trump campaign surrogate.
9 are Trump businesses
Trump Golf, Trump Waikiki, Trump Las Vegas . . . Trump apparently loves keeping up to date on the latest news about all the businesses he no longer has anything to do with!
2 are fan accounts
Trump follows Diamonds & Silk, the duo who became notorious for their viral pro-Trump videos during the campaign, and Official Team Trump. To be fair, the latter account was set up by his campaign team during the election, but it operates much like a breathless account of what fantastic things President Trump is doing day in and day out to Make America Great Again even now.
7 are his family members
Trump follows his wife, Melania, his two daughters-in-law, and each of his adult children — yes, even Tiffany! However, we can't help but notice that Jared Kushner (who, to be fair, doesn't use Twitter despite having an account) is notably missing.
2 are the married couple behind The Apprentice
TV producer Mark Burnett and his wife, Touched By an Angel star Roma Downey, both earned follows from Trump. While Downey never had an official hand in The Apprentice, she's a prolific producer herself, mostly focusing on faith-based projects.
2 are sports figures
WWE mogul Vince McMahon and South African golf legend Gary Player round out Trump's follower list. (OK, it might be a bit of a stretch to consider wrestling a real sport, but let's move along.) Interestingly, while Player has a villa named after him at Trump's Miami resort, he's also been fairly critical of the POTUS's comments on immigrants and his not-so-presidential behavior.
For a man who dedicates so much time to Twitter, we think it's fair to read into Trump's behavior on the social media platform just a bit — and when we do, his follow list is both revealing and reflective. It features no voices of dissent from the left, in media or in politics, and it seems to make it clear that his closest confidantes are either family members or people who work for him. Vince McMahon may be the only person on the list who could qualify as a close friend, and even in that case, he's someone Trump has done business with in the past.
Trump's love of being loved is evident in the fan accounts he follows. In essence, the POTUS's Twitter list just confirms what we already know about his values and traits: he prizes loyalty, his family, right-wing and hard-line conservative politics, people who carry out his wishes, businesses with his name on them, and people who fawn all over him.
