Saying farewell to the Summer season isn't always the easiest, but knowing that Fall treats and gorgeous scenery in an array of harvest-y colors awaits us makes it something to look forward to. We'll slide on a cozy sweater in the crisp air, pick way more apples than we need, and eat equally as many cider donuts against a backdrop of vibrant foliage, because, Fall.
Luckily, there are a plethora of destinations across the US to drool over the foliage transformation. And depending on where and when you go, you may just be able to catch different shades in more than one locale this season. So, pack your plaid shirts, because these 15 Fall foliage spots will have you craving a pumpkin spice latte faster than you can break out your slow-cooker for football Sundays.
Upstate New York knows how to do Fall. The Keene Valley and High Peaks region of the Adirondacks are just a couple of solid spots for leaf gawking in late September through October. Set out on a hike under a canopy of Autumn goodness, or just sip warm cider by one of the multitude of lakes, and chase it down with pie from the Noon Mark Diner. With trails of every length and difficulty, there's something for everyone. The whole area will be shining with Fall coloring, so no matter what, you (and the leaves) will be golden.
All of Vermont is a classic Autumn postcard scene during the Fall season, making it the perfect leaf-peeping road trip. Embark on a scavenger hunt for covered bridges while stuffing your face with cider donuts. Highlights might include Woodstock, Putney, Stowe, Peacham, and Warren (the general store has fantastic sandwiches and moonpies). Oh, and that maple syrup isn't going to stock up on its own, after all.
All of Colorado is stunning under a blanket of foliage, but Aspen and the surrounding area puts the "gold" in golden during the Fall season with its namesake trees. Vast views are tinged with a vibrant yellowy hue, complementing the dramatic mountain scenery. Road tripping is sufficient, but getting out on the trails to explore on foot really immerses you in the foliage feel. Head out to the famous Maroon Bells, or explore around Independence Pass for sweeping landscapes that'll blow your Fall-lovin' mind.
New England in general has a high concentration of Fall foliage, but New Hampshire is one of the bright stars, sporting impressive colors in September and October. Take in views while hiking at Crawford Notch, or even camp in the park to witness sunsets or sunrises illuminate the already gorgeous tones.
Ah, Yosemite. Classic scenes that can only be enhanced by Autumn coloring and the significantly less amount of tourists. This part of the Golden State usually turns, well, golden, between September to mid-October, right before Winter conditions start to close the main road through the park. Heading south will allow foliage adorers to experience the color changing leaves a little later in the season, depending on weather. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is shared by both Tennessee and North Carolina. Basing yourself in Asheville, NC will not only give you access to plenty of outdoor activities, but also have you close to the action for Fall events like a cider festival. We'll take our Fall foliage up a notch with a waterfall too, please. Head to northern Michigan's Tahquamenon Falls State Park for this dual falls treasure. To see them framed by Autumn tones, visitors can check this foliage predictor for the Upper Peninsula area. The waterfalls are easily accessible, and the park offers hiking and walking trails, as well as canoeing and camping.
Heading west is always a good idea, and during the shoulder season of Fall, you'll likely run into very few tourists. Visiting Grand Teton National Park and Jackson Hole in Autumn doesn't just provide magical hues, but also increases your chances of seeing more wildlife like elk and moose. Fly fishing and horseback riding are just some of the amazing ways to enjoy the Fall season in this area of Wyoming. The Blue Ridge Parkway is a well-known scenic drive stretching through Virginia and North Carolina that flourishes with colors in October. There are gorgeous overlooks and hikes for all levels, like Purgatory Mountain, Sharp Top trail (pictured), Roaring Run, and Natural Bridge Park.
Foliage from a hot spring? Sign us up. Soaking in the warm waters of a natural pool while enjoying the scenic Fall coloring is something out of a dream in Idaho. With a seemingly endless amount of hot springs, you can travel almost anywhere in the state and be rewarded with this epic combo. A casual drive on the Selkirk Loop, exploring Sun Valley, and watching Mesa Falls will all gift glorious autumnal hues. If there's anything we've learned about Idaho, it's that you can't go wrong.
Who says the south can't produce amazing Fall colors? Certainly not Georgia. The North Georgia Mountains are an under-the-radar Fall destination worth visiting. Take in those Autumn shades in Tallulah Gorge State Park or head to Dukes Creek Falls. Other than getting up close and personal with nature, the town of Dahlonega hosts a Fall festival in October called Gold Rush Days.
Another win for New York, the Catskill Mountains region is the place to be. The proximity to New York City, bountiful outdoor activities, and a newly booming lodging, restaurant, and brewery scene make this a great destination for the Fall season. Embark on a morning hike or paddle, then spend an afternoon at an Oktoberfest festival — all in an Autumn day in the Catskills.
Flagstaff, AZ has a very different landscape than the rest of the desert-heavy state, which means Autumn shines with some southwest zing. Lockett Meadow just outside of town is a foliage seeker's haven, and for a different perspective, visitors can venture to the Arizona Snowbowl for a scenic chairlift ride. There are also many Fall-related festivals in September and October to plan your trip around.
Autumn in Alaska is short-lived and on the earlier side of the season, but boy oh boy, is it spectacular. Late August into early September is usually peak time at Denali National Park, depending on weather and elevation. Not only do visitors have the chance to see vivid Fall coloring with epic mountain backdrops, but the opportunity to view the northern lights in the evening brings the experience to legendary levels.
Want a little coast with your foliage? Head to Camden, Maine, aka the epitome of New England coastal towns. Start with a Fall sunrise overlooking Curtis Island, stroll the adorable downtown streets, and lounge at the gorgeous Whitehall property with a drink by the courtyard fire pit after a game of shuffleboard. For more sweeping views, take a drive up to Mount Battie. Also make sure to stop for an ice cream (or two) at Camden Cone, because it's that good.
