One of the many magnificent things about the Bernina Express — besides the scenery — is how it connects two countries: Italy and Switzerland. In as little as four hours, this train will provide direct access from the Swiss city of Chur to the small, mountainous town of Tirano, Italy (pictured above); making the ride as convenient as it is exhilerating.
While most people start their journey in Switzerland, I highly recommend doing the opposite if you're hoping to avoid the crowds. Since my husband and I were coming from Lake Como, we decided to board in Tirano, and practically had the entire train car to ourselves.
