PayPal People Economy Ad
PayPal's Newest Ad Will Make You Feel Uncomfortable at Best
If a group of adults chanting in unison about "magical money" sounds like the stuff of your nightmares, you may not want to watch PayPal's newest ad. The ecommerce company launched its latest advertising campaign to promote "The People Economy," an effort to connect people through person-to-person monetary transactions. Instead of coming off as an uplifting take on the power of unity, however, the commercial has been rubbing viewers the wrong way.
The commercial flips through hundreds of faces that are all speaking the same script, making it both audibly and visually overwhelming. Perhaps the most disconcerting aspect of the commercial, though, is what the many speakers are saying: that ecurrency (like Bitcoin) is "magical" money. Rather than explaining the complexities of this new economic movement, PayPal glosses over the important details to focus on its ease of use. Many YouTube commenters found this outrageous, asserting that Bitcoin was founded to escape corporations like PayPal.
So, do you find this ad as off-putting as the rest of the Internet? Check out the video for yourself to see if it's truly as frightening as people are saying.
