PlayStation Is in Hot Water Over a Seriously Sexist Commercial
While we wish that this was an uncommon occurrence, it's not — yet another icon of the geek culture industry has gotten into trouble over sexist advertising. PlayStation tried to quietly remove this sexist PS Vita commercial from its European YouTube channel, but it unsurprisingly spread like wildfire online . . . gamers are infuriated by the undeniably sexist attitude perpetuated in the advertisement.
When considering the troublesome gender issues unearthed in Gamergate, this commercial becomes even more concerning. If even the companies creating today's video games can't respect women as anything more than sex objects (like the doctor in this ad, who is described in Business Insider as "a sexy lady first and a gamer second"), how are the people playing the games supposed to move past these discriminatory ideas?
