If You Have a Dry Scalp and Dull Hair, Fable & Mane Might Be What You Need
When I first heard about Fable & Mane, I was beyond ecstatic that a South Asian-owned brand is not only making headlines but also bringing the timeless traditions of South Asian, Ayurvedic hair oiling to the mainstream market. The practice of hair oiling and using Ayurvedic herbs and ingredients to solve scalp and hair issues have been used for centuries. From the growth and moisturizing benefits of castor oil, neem, and aloe vera to the nourishing benefits of coconut oil, dashmool, and turmeric, Fable & Mane's line feels like it was created for me and my hair type. I felt proud and compelled to try out the line — to finally see myself represented in the mainstream hair-care game.
Ever since I was a little girl, my mom would concoct a mix of oils and herbs, heat it, and massage it into my scalp and hair to deep condition from root to tip the night before I washed my hair. It was my first impression of self-care and giving my hair some much-needed TLC. It's a practice I continue to do at least once a week. Here's the thing: DIY isn't always your best friend. There were countless times when I used a little too much of certain ingredients, and my scalp and hair reacted in a not-so-great way, not to mention it created a giant mess in my kitchen and bedroom. Fable & Mane took that process and streamlined it to make it more manageable, accessible, and safe. It took the natural ingredients used from ancient times but formulated it with a scientific approach.
If you have dry, dull hair and scalp or hair that requires nourishment, the line is a must have. I have always dealt with a dry and flakey scalp; sometimes, it gets so irritated and itchy. It's not a good look. Surprisingly, the Fable & Mane line eliminated my scalp concerns. Even my DIYs couldn't solve those issues! My hair felt so soft and smooth, I could not stop touching my hair and playing around with it. I was able to blow-dry and style my hair with such ease.
The line is nourishing and rich, so a little goes a long way. I highly recommend the Fable & Mane HoliRoots Oil and Fable & Mane Shampoo if you primarily have scalp concerns. If you have dry and dull ends, the Fable & Mane Conditioner and Fable & Mane Hair Mask will do wonders in diminishing frizz and nourishing your hair. The entire line is clean at Sephora, is vegan and cruelty-free, and comes in recyclable packaging. Keep reading to see my in-depth review of each product and how I used it.
Fable & Mane HoliRoots Pre-Wash Hair Treatment Oil
The Fable & Mane HoliRoots Pre-Wash Hair Treatment Oil ($34) is a lightweight yet nourishing oil that you use before you wash your hair. I sectioned my hair into three sections horizontally and vertically and used five to six dropper fulls concentrating on my scalp and roots, then bringing it down to the rest of my hair. I massaged the oil into my roots for about 30 minutes, braided it, and slept with the Fable & Mane HoliRoots Pre-Wash Hair Treatment Oil in my hair overnight. If you don't want to get the oil on your sheets, sleep on an old T-shirt or towel.
The Fable & Mane HoliRoots Pre-Wash Hair Treatment Oil contains ashwagandha, dashmool, castor oil, and various other Ayurvedic oils and extracts such as brahmi, sesame-seed oil, safflower oil, olive oil, jojoba oil, grape-seed oil, and so much more. All of these ingredients promote hair growth and strength while protecting it from damage, breakage, and split ends. My scalp and roots loved this oil and drank it up. The Fable & Mane HoliRoots Pre-Wash Hair Treatment Oil was not thick and viscous where it felt like it was sitting on top of my scalp; the oil felt like it was getting absorbed by my roots and nourished my scalp.
The scent of the Fable & Mane HoliRoots Pre-Wash Hair Treatment Oil is absolute perfection; I wish it could be made into a perfume. It was so familiar yet intoxicating and sensual with notes of warmth and florals. Turns out the oil is scented with madurai, nectar derived from red champaca flowers.
Fable & Mane HoliRoots Hydrating Shampoo
The Fable & Mane HoliRoots Hydrating Shampoo ($29) contains tiger herb, coconut, and aloe to hydrate and nourish the scalp while cleansing it gently. If you have excess scalp and product buildup, you might want to use it twice, but it effectively rinses off the HoliRoots oil. The Fable & Mane HoliRoots Hydrating Shampoo left my roots feeling clean but not stripped. My hair and scalp felt nourished and moisturized. It smells like warm cocoa butter.
Fable & Mane HoliRoots Hydrating Conditioner
The Fable & Mane HoliRoots Hydrating Conditioner ($29) contains turmeric, coconut, and hibiscus and has a thick, cream-like consistency. I focused the conditioner on the ends of my hair and worked up toward my midshaft, leaving it in for around two minutes. My ends felt nourished and hydrated without feeling weighed down. My hair felt like it absorbed all the nutrients from the Fable & Mane HoliRoots Hydrating Conditioner and became softer and smoother.
Fable & Mane HoliRoots Repairing Hair Mask
The Fable & Mane HoliRoots Repairing Hair Mask ($32) is thick and rich in consistency and contains coconut cream, banana, and mango butter. I used a dollop of the mask, focusing on my ends and working it up to my roots, leaving it in for around seven minutes. The Fable & Mane HoliRoots Repairing Hair Mask nourished and moisturized my hair, making it feel so silky and buttery soft. It smells like a tropical smoothie that transports you to a relaxing oasis.
