The "Overlip" Lining Hack Is the Easiest Way to Fake Fuller Lips

If you've spent any time on beauty TikTok, then you've likely come across a slew of beauty trends that you've been able to add to your arsenal. From "honey lips" to the demi method, countless tips have enriched many makeup routines for the better. Still, some are so easy, I wonder why I hadn't thought of them before. This was exactly the case with the "overlip" lining hack.

A K-beauty trend, the overlip technique has been making waves on the app for its simple approach to making lips appear larger without any obvious lines. "You're using a pencil to overextend your natural lip shape," TikToker Sarah Chey says in a video explaining the look.

What's different in this version is that you use neutral shades to blur the lip line rather than define it, which in turn makes your mouth look very plump. Chey says people often use a thicker lip pencil to help achieve this effect, as well as a lip gloss for that extra shine. Next to blush, lips are my favorite category to experiment with, so I had to try this hack for fuller lips immediately.

To get the look, I opted for two products: the Haus Labs Le Monster Lip Crayon ($22) in Maple Matte and the Hourglass Phantom Volumizing Glossy Balm ($36) in the shade Slip.

I first lined my lips with the lip pencil, which was a neutral pink shade that looked a bit closer to the color of my inner lip than the traditional brown shades that I usually use.

As for technique, I followed Chey's instructions and blurred the lip pencil with my fingers to make it look a bit more seamless. I've seen people opt for just smushing their lips together, but I chose to do it manually to keep some semblance of my natural lip shape. I followed up by adding Slip, a neutral rose hue, on top. The result was a gorgeous pinky-brown color with a glossy finish that looked like my lips but infinitely better.

This hack was easy and straight to the point, which is my favorite type. I'm typically in a rush whenever I'm doing a full face, so I appreciate a technique that doesn't add 10 steps to my routine when I'm supposed to be on my way out the door. Not only is this convenient, it takes less than a minute to do and does not have to be extremely precise for me to get the results I want. I will definitely be using it again, and in the meantime, I'll be playing around with different combinations to see what other looks I can achieve.
