Someone Call Lyft — These 12 Celebrities Don't Drive

Is there anything more entertaining than discovering fun facts about your favorite celebrities? Whether it's analyzing their personalities via star signs or taking a closer look at their dating histories, there's always something new to learn about the Hollywood elite. For instance, did you know that quite a few celebrities don't know how to drive? For most people, getting behind the wheel of a car every day is just another part of life, but some celebrities spend their whole lives riding shotgun.

While some of your favorite famous faces simply never got their license because they hail from metropolitan areas where driving is more trouble than it's worth, others skipped this particular rite of passage due to driving anxieties. Lena Dunham, J.K. Rowling, and Tina Fey are just a few of the celebrities who never learned to drive. Read on to find out which other stars never had to deal with the angst that goes along with trying to learn how to parallel park.

Lena Dunham

The cocreator of Girls is a New Yorker, so it's not too surprising that she never bothered learning to drive. However, Dunham's reason for not wanting to get behind the wheel is one tied to her anxieties. In 2013, she explained to Rolling Stone, "I'm afraid of Rebecca Gayhearting a child." (In 2001, actress Rebecca Gayheart struck a young boy with her car and he later died.)

Christina Aguilera can drive, but the former pop star, now The Voice judge, chooses not to because she's afraid of dealing with the paparazzi that populate the streets of Los Angeles. "I don't drive. Well, I have a driver's license and I got it when I was 21. I am 30 now. I am terrified of driving in LA, with paparazzi, running them over, you hear stories," Aguilera told Jimmy Kimmel in 2011.

That's right, comedy superstar Tina Fey doesn't drive. During an episode of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, Fey confessed to Jerry Seinfeld, "I don't have a license anymore." The star went on to say she doesn't see the purpose of driving in New York City, and that it's been so long since she's been behind the wheel that she's forgotten how to drive at all.

While some people wanted Ricky Gervais to host Top Gear after Jeremy Clarkson was fired from the UK car series, the comedian was quick to point out why he wouldn't make the best candidate. "I cannot even drive, and I very rarely wear a jacket with jeans and brogues," Gervais told The Mirror. "So I wouldn't fit in."

Is it any wonder that train travel is so romanticized in the Harry Potter series? Author J.K. Rowling doesn't appear to be a fan of cars — aside from flying Ford Anglias. Rowling once addressed the subject on Twitter: "Because I have no spatial awareness, can't work machinery and have a tenuous grasp on reality," Rowling wrote, "it's really best for everyone I don't drive."

Beckinsale can do almost anything on screen, from taking down werewolves in the Underworld series to rocking period clothes in Love and Friendship. But the actress has no interest in getting behind the wheel of a car, even though her daughter is now motoring around Los Angeles. "It's become embarrassing; it used to be a cute thing that I hadn't gotten around to doing it, but now it's become quite weird . . . Uber does love me," Beckinsale said in a 2016 interview.

British pop star Robbie Williams was happy to offer up an original song for Pixar's Cars 2, but the singer doesn't have a car of his own. Growing up in the UK, Williams never needed a license, but as he's grown older, not driving has become a bit of an issue. "I don't have a driver's license. In London, you just don't drive because the traffic is terrible, so you get cabs to go everywhere, which has left me being 37 and still without a driver's license in Los Angeles," Williams told Digital Spy in 2011.

Barbara is one of the most famous journalists in the world, but she has to rely on other people to get her where she's going. She doesn't seem to mind too much. While she hasn't offered an explanation as to why she doesn't drive, she didn't mince words when she shared the factoid about herself with Oprah. "Years ago I heard my daughter on the phone saying, 'My mommy doesn't drive. My mommy burns the meatloaf. My mommy doesn't do anything except television.'" There are whole areas in which I feel very inadequate. Who doesn't drive except me?" she mused.

Twitter user @danielle_mcc17, who's a non-driver herself, analyzed Lorde's lyrics and realized the singer often sings about relying on public transportation or her friends to get around. She concluded that Lorde is only dreaming about driving Cadillacs because she doesn't get behind the wheel herself. Her theory reached the 21-year-old songstress, and Lorde confirmed on Twitter that it's true; she doesn't have her license. "You're right! But I'm working on it, I have the book," Lorde tweeted.

When he was just 14, singer and producer Quincy Jones was involved in a car accident that left him with a life-long fear of driving. "I'm scared of driving . . . I don't drive," he said in an interview. "I never drove. When I was in 14 . . . we were going to Walla Walla (in Washington) and a Trailways bus hit us and three people got their faces crushed on the concrete. All the guys in my car — there were two up front, two in the back, and me in the middle — all of them got killed."

Carey Mulligan has a complicated relationship with cars. The actress was forced to get behind the wheel for 2010's Never Let Me Go, and the experience proved to be traumatic. She persevered, though, and ended up getting her American driving license. Unfortunately, that doesn't help her in the UK, where she's failed her driving test five times so far. "I could only drive for like six months when I was living here and then I went back to England and I can't drive anywhere," Mulligan explained to Jimmy Kimmel in a November 2017 interview.

Streisand used to drive, but she gave it up for good after a mishap on the highway in the '90s. As she explained in an interview with Time, "I was driving one day, and I found myself driving up the off-ramp of a highway." Since then, she's relied on drivers to get her where she needs to be.
