Class Is in Session, Because the "Abbott Elementary" Cast Won Big at the Emmys

School is back in session. On Monday, the cast of "Abbott Elementary" stepped out in full force for the 2022 Emmy Awards. Sheryl Lee Ralph was one of the first to arrive, looking glamorous in a strapless black gown and accompanied by her husband, Vincent Hughes. Meanwhile, Tyler James Williams showed up looking dapper in a blue pinstripe suit, and Lisa Ann Walter was a vision in an emerald-green gown. Joining them was creator Quinta Brunson, who wowed in a metallic brown dress.

During the ceremony, Ralph earned a standing ovation when she took home the award for best supporting actress in a comedy series. The show also won two additional awards for outstanding casting for a comedy series and outstanding writing for a comedy series.

"Abbott Elementary" scored a total of seven Emmy nominations. Brunson, who also stars in the series, made history with three nominations (outstanding comedy series, lead actress in a comedy, and writing for a comedy series), making her the first Black woman to earn that amount of nods in the comedy categories in the same year. At 32 years old, Brunson is also the youngest Black woman ever nominated for outstanding lead actress in a comedy series.

Of course, the nominations came as no surprise, given the show's major season one success. Now we're just counting down the days until "Abbott Elementary" returns for its second installment on Sept. 21. Luckily for us, the trailer dropped earlier in the day.
