21 Couples Who Had to Work Together After Their Real-Life Relationships Ended

King and Elordi met on the set of Netflix's "The Kissing Booth" in 2017 — where they played girlfriend and boyfriend Elle and Noah — and dated for more than a year before deciding to go their separate ways in 2018. Since breaking up, the exes have filmed both the second and third movies in the trilogy, which were shot in tandem.

King first addressed the awkwardness of working with her ex during an October 2019 episode of the podcast "Mood With Lauren Elizabeth," explaining it was a "sacrifice" she was willing to make for the sake of their fans. She added, "It was a wild experience. But honestly, it was a really beautiful time. Because I learned a lot about myself and I grew as an actor. I grew as a person on this." She expressed a similar sentiment during an August 2020 interview with Cosmopolitan, saying of the experience, "No one's thinking to themselves, 'That was easy,' because it wasn't."

Though Reinhart and Sprouse first met in 2016 while playing occasional lovers Betty and Jughead on "Riverdale," they didn't go public with their own romance until 2018. The two dated on and off for two years before finally splitting for good in 2020. Not long after their second and (maybe) final breakup, the former couple began filming season five of their CW series.

Back in July 2019 during an interview with W, Reinhart spoke about the grueling hours spent filming and said she couldn't imagine how "miserable" she'd be if she "hated" her fellow cast members. Later, after returning to Vancouver to resume "Riverdale" filming in September 2020, Reinhart told Nylon she felt "like a prisoner" being stuck in Canada, though she didn't explicitly say that feeling had anything to do with her ex.

Not long after, Sprouse posted an Instagram announcing their breakup, saying he wished Reinhart the "utmost love and happiness moving forward."

Melton and Mendes met on the set of "Riverdale" when Melton joined the cast in season two as Mendes's love interest, but they didn't start dating until 2018. The two went their separate ways in 2019, and — like Reinhart and Sprouse — they are currently still starring on the series as Veronica and Reggie.

The exes have yet to publicly comment on their breakup, but back in May 2019 while the couple were still together, Mendes told Teen Vogue she didn't think it would be a big deal if she and Charles were to split. "That's a part of life," she said of breakups. "I wouldn't be embarrassed about it. It happens. I know I'm happy, and I know where I am in my life, so I'm going to let [people on Twitter] say whatever they want. Why should I care?"

Hoult and Lawrence got together on the set of "X-Men: First Class" in 2010 and dated on and off until 2014, right around the time when "X-Men: Days of Future Past" wrapped. Since then, the two had to work together on "X-Men: Apocalypse," which released in 2016, and "Dark Phoenix," which came out in 2019. Luckily, their characters, Beast and Mystique, didn't have too many intimate scenes.

During a January 2019 interview with Evening Standard, Hoult said that working with Lawrence post-breakup wasn't at all weird. "It's pretty similar to 'Skins,'" he said, referring to the show he starred on at the beginning of his career. "We're a big family. We've been doing those movies since we were 20 years old. As much as the 'Skins' crowd grew up together, the 'X-Men' crowd really grew up together. It's been a good eight, nine years making those movies. We've all got to get along. We've all got to have fun."

Monaghan and Lilly connected on the set of "Lost," and though their characters, Charlie and Kate, never got together, the actors dated from 2004 to 2007. After deciding to call it quits, both actors remained on the series until its finale in 2010, although Monaghan didn't appear in season five and only appeared in flashbacks in season six.

The pair didn't address their relationship for years, though Monaghan did seem to shade Lilly at one point. In 2013, Monaghan replied to a tweet that read, "Evangeline looked unreal in The Hobbit, man oh man," writing, "Nah. I don't date cheaters."

Then, in August 2022, Monaghan discussed their breakup on Anna Faris's podcast, "Unqualified." "I don't really know how she would explain the narrative, but from my point of view, it was probably the first time in my life that I was just kind of all in," he said of his relationship with Lilly.

But everything came to an end when Monaghan's friends claimed she was cheating. "I mean, to say I was devastated is an understatement, you know," Monaghan said. "I had to be told by a third party like, 'You do realize that she's with this guy,' when we were together . . . Losing that potential was super sad. But it also got me to where I am as a person. So I'm very happy that it all happened."

Panettiere and Ventimiglia met on the set of "Heroes" in 2006, where they played niece and uncle — though that didn't deter some fans from shipping the pair. The two dated from 2007 to 2009, and they remained on the show until the end of the fourth and final season in 2010.

Following the experience, Ventimiglia told Mr. Porter in September 2017 that he would "never again" date a costar. "There are things that happen to you in your life that shape who you are," he added. "Everything I've been through from jobs to friendships to partnerships — everything has built me to who I am. You learn from it. You learn a better way of doing things. Panettiere wasn't the only costar Ventimiglia dated. Before "Heroes," Ventimiglia got together with his onscreen love interest Bledel on "Gilmore Girls." The actors dated for more than three years until — just like their characters, Jess and Rory — the couple parted ways in 2006. A decade later, they ended up reuniting for the show's 2016 Netflix reboot, "Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life."

Though Bledel didn't explicitly comment on her experience working with Ventimiglia 10 years after their breakup, she did say during the Television Critics Association press tour in July 2016 that "it was great to work with all of them again," referring to all of Rory's past lovers who appeared in the revival.

It doesn't seem Ventimiglia has any hard feelings, either. Following Bledel's win at the 2017 Primetime Emmy Awards for outstanding guest actress in a drama series for her performance on "The Handmaid's Tale," Ventimiglia told The Daily Dish that he was very happy for her. "She's always been a great actor," he added.

Dobrev and Somerhalder met on the set of "The Vampire Diaries" in 2009 — where they played on-and-off lovers Elena and Damon — and it wasn't long before the two started dating IRL. After their breakup in 2013, both actors remained on the series until its finale in 2017 (though in 2015, Dobrev went from a main cast member to a guest on the series).

Even now, the actors remain close friends. As Dobrev told E! News in May 2015, "I've said this before, that we didn't break up because anything bad happened or because there wasn't love or friendship. I love him and the friendship is still strong and I think he's great and I care about him. And that didn't change. Yes, we're professional and that's fine. We were friends long before we dated and we still are now."

The two even hilariously addressed their split on stage after winning the best chemistry award at the 2014 People's Choice Awards. Of the moment, Dobrev told E! News, "I was trying to figure out, like what do you say in that situation? We were like, well, we're cool, we're friends and costars. He's a great person, I'm a great person . . . Later, during a June 2018 appearance on "Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen," Bush said the relationship was a mistake. "We were two stupid kids who had no business being in a relationship in the first place," she added.

Though Carpenter and Hall played adopted siblings Debra and Dexter on "Dexter," that didn't stop the two from falling for each other. On "The Big Bang Theory," Galecki and Cuoco played neighbors turned lovers from 2007 to 2017, but you may not realize the actors also dated in secret for two years. They got together soon after meeting on the show but decided to end their romance in 2009.

Cuoco first opened up about their relationship during a September 2010 interview with "CBS Watch!" and had nothing but good things to say about it. "It was such a huge part of my life and no one knew about it," she said. "This is the first time I've ever talked about it, ever. It was a wonderful relationship, but we never spoke a word about it and never went anywhere together." Later, she added, "We knew we weren't destined to be together. We accepted it and said, 'Look, if we ever break up, we will be professional.' I'm so lucky it was a mutual ending and that we don't hate each other."

Galecki expressed a similar sentiment during his own interview with "CBS Watch!" in December 2013, saying he and Cuoco remained close, per Us Weekly. "We're dear friends, still. Cuoco wasn't the first onscreen love interest Galecki ever romanced. Though it's unclear how long they dated, Galecki and his "Roseanne" costar Gilbert dated while playing David and Darlene between 1988 and 1997, and they even reunited for the series reboot more than 20 years later in 2018.

During a September 2013 episode of "The Talk," Gilbert revealed that she realized she was gay while dating Galecki. "I thought he was super cute and had a crush on him," she recounted. "We started dating, and he would come over and we would, like, make out, and then I would start to get depressed . . .
