Legendary musician Sting accepted the merit award at the AMAs with a speech that made some thinly veiled references to America's current situation. "It's important for me as a musical migrant to acknowledge the very real debt I owe to American music. After all, American music lit the musical spark in my mind," he said. "This unique experiment, perhaps America's greatest and most influential export, rock and roll. [It's] a giant musical jam session where the doors were always open.
