Kaling welcomed her second child, a son named Spencer, on Sept. 3, 2020. In an Oct. 8 episode of "The Late Show With Stephen Colbert," Kaling shared the news for the very first time. "I'm telling it for the first time now," she said. "It feels so strange, but I gave birth to a baby boy on September 3," she said. "This is news to a lot of people, it's true!"
In December 2020, Kaling shared the inspiration behind his first name, which is actually connected to his sister's name! Rather than choosing more unique baby names, Kaling went the "classic" name route, and chose two names that happen to pay homage to a legendary Hollywood couple, Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy.
On Spencer's first birthday, Kaling shared her first photo of the little one alongside a sweet caption that revealed his nickname: Spike! "Friday was my son Spencer's first birthday. My daughter Kit is pretty cautious with new people. Not this guy. If you happen to make eye contact with Spencer, he lights up like you are old war buddies and he makes a beeline to you," she wrote. "I had Spencer during Covid and it was a strange isolated time, but the instant I saw him I knew he would make everything better. And he did! Happy birthday, Spike!"
