How Is Deadpool Connected to the Avengers?

Deadpool Exists in the Avengers' Universe, But Here's Why We'll Never Get a Crossover Movie

Deadpool's Ryan Reynolds recently tweeted a rejection letter that Wade Wilson receives from Tony Stark with regards to joining the Avengers. If you were wondering if Infinity War's devastating ending bears any weight on the new Deadpool 2 movie, the straightforward answer is no.

While the characters in Infinity War and Deadpool hail from the same comic book universe, the films have different distribution companies — Avengers with Disney and Deadpool with Fox. This divide, however, will soon end with Disney's acquisition of Fox. Given Deadpool's alliance with the Avengers in the comics, we might see Wade Wilson go toe to toe in a joke-off with Thor on the big screen, say, ten to twenty years from now.

For now, the acquisition won't change things for the upcoming Marvel Studios films, including Avengers 4. "Any of that deal would take a while to get going and years from whenever and if ever it happens. So, certainly it won't impact the five movies we've announced, and it probably wouldn't impact anything for a handful of years after that," Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige explained.

But the comics offer a flicker of hope for a future Deadpool and Avengers mashup movie. In the series Uncanny Avengers, Steve Rogers creates the Avenger Unity team to join Humans, Mutants, and Inhumans together. One of his most controversial recruits is none other than the foul-mouthed Deadpool. Things don't kick off with a pretty start. Wilson touches an android during a battle and passes on to it both his cancerous lesions and his regenerative abilities, much to the Avengers' consternation. The android dies, but the team scolds Deadpool for his recklessness.

Deadpool tries to make himself helpful by capitalizing on his fame to fund the new team . . . but the team still finds him insufferable. Spider-Man even calls it quits with the Avengers because of Deadpool. Later on, the real Steve Rogers is replaced with an evil fascist who's actually a Hydra sleeper agent. (Hydra is a global terrorist organization in the Marvel universe.) As a consequence of his unwavering loyalty to Cap, Wilson ends up killing Avenger allies and inadvertently becomes an important part of Hydra's conquest.

For now, we'll take what we can get and enjoy Deadpool and the Avengers as they appear in their separate movie universes. But we'll be eagerly waiting for the day when they fight side by side, knowing very well this alliance isn't just the stuff of fan fiction.
