While the premiere begins with a focus on family members meeting Caitlyn as Caitlyn — hair, makeup, dress, everything — one thing becomes very clear: You already know Caitlyn. Her personality is the same good-natured, sweet personality you came to know and love when Caitlyn was Bruce on Keeping Up With the Kardashians. Caitlyn herself says it a number of times in the first episode, and Caitlyn's mother has this same conclusion after spending time with her. Even though Caitlyn goes through the process of introducing herself to her family, it's clear that it's important to her that people know that inside, she's still the same person.

The premiere only features the appearance of two Kardashians: Kylie and Kim (and a warm Kanye West), when they meet Caitlyn for the first time. (Yes, we're counting Kylie Jenner, since she is a star of Keeping Up With the Kardashians). Though she gets calls from Rob and others, the episode is fairly Kardashian-free, and if the premiere is any indication, that theme will continue. This doesn't feel like a Keeping Up With the Kardashians spinoff whatsoever, but I think we should expect a reasonable amount of their presence, given their importance in Caitlyn's life. Indeed, the promo for the whole season revealed issues with the Kardashian family that you'd want to see, like Khloé's dislike of the Vanity Fair article.

Yes, yes, and yes. While there is some fun fluff like Caitlyn showing off her new, beautiful closet to Kim, Caitlyn stresses over and over again that the reason she's doing the show is to prevent more tragedy. “We don’t want people dying over this stuff," she intones, and acknowledges that she has this incredible platform and needs to use it. The final segment of the premiere follows Caitlyn to San Diego, where she goes to comfort the family of a young trans teen, Kyler Prescott, who had committed suicide. She's there, and she listens, and she learns. "What a responsibility I have — I hope I get it right," Caitlyn says at one point. So far, so good.

Actually, I Am Cait is surprisingly funny! Despite how seriously it takes the subject at hand, the tone of the show is not totally solemn. There are moments of levity, like when Kylie puts green extensions in Caitlyn's hair for fun and they joke about how much more fun girl stuff is than talking about sports. Above all, Caitlyn is funny. Her excellent sense of humor comes out in scenes like the one in which Kim examines her closet, and says of one dress, "Mom has that." Caitlyn jokes that she should wear it at the same time as Kris so they could be pitted agains each other in a "Who Wore It Best" feature.

I Am Cait is more relatable than you'd think, no matter who you are. Anyone who's ever had news or a big change to reveal to their parents will totally feel for Caitlyn when she stresses the most about introducing herself to her mother. It's endearing when she says plaintively, "It's my mom," to explain why she's so nervous. She also wonders about how she's going to approach the issue with her guy friends and learns she needs a sports bra playing tennis. Caitlyn may be the new normal, but she's also just normal.
