The 6 Most Tragic Twists From This Is Us

We should have known from the very first episode that this show would shred our emotions. Rebecca goes into labor and even though Jack is determined that nothing bad can happen on his birthday, one of the babies doesn't make it. We've just met these people and already we're beside ourselves!

Randall finds his birth father in the first episode, and you're all set to hate him for abandoning his kid, right? Turns out that William is a really nice guy (who has made some bad decisions, yes), but he is also dying of stage four stomach cancer. Sh*t.

Miguel seems like such a nice guy! Back in the past, he's a good friend of Jack's, and seems to have the tiniest crush on Rebecca. Fast-forward to the present day and they're married. Jack is nowhere to be found, and Randall's kids are calling Miguel "grandpa." Hell to the no.

After the whole Miguel fiasco, we were left to wonder what happened to Jack. Perhaps they got a divorce? Nope, he's dead. The kids have alluded to it in the present day, and it's painful to watch the flashbacks knowing Jack's fate is already sealed — and we'll likely have to watch when it happens.

This is a low-key doozy. After living for 36 years without him, Randall finds his birth father. They're having a grand old time getting to know each other . . . until Randall finds out that Rebecca has known his dad's identity this WHOLE time. He's so upset that he conjures up his dead dad during an accidental mushroom trip, then he can't even hug his mom.

The Winter finale was NOT messing around. If you thought the title, "Last Christmas," was referring to William, you're wrong. Toby and Kate finally kiss and make up, then he collapses on the coffee table. He's flat-lining when the episode ends, but the jury is still out on whether he's actually gone for good.
