Sam Smith stepped into the Radio 1 Live Lounge in London on Wednesday, and when it came to performing the requisite cover of a song, he decided to tackle a Christmas classic. The choice to sing the beloved holiday tune came easily to Smith, who confessed to hating most festive music following a stint working for a famous UK greetings card chain. He told host Clara Amfo, "I don't really like Christmas songs. I'm such a Scrooge when it comes to Christmas songs because I worked in Clinton Cards when I was a kid and they just ruined these Christmas songs for me. There's only one I like and I'm singing that today . . ."
The tune in question is "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas", and the "Too Good at Goodbyes" singer handles it with all of his usual pathos, turning the classic song into a soulful ballad that will make you want to hug someone immediately. Of course, it's not really the only Christmas song he's performed this year. Smith was one of many stars who belted out "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" with James Corden as part of his Christmas Carpool Karaoke!
