Susan Kelechi Watson Talking About This Is Us December 2016

Susan Kelechi Watson Gives a Cheeky "Spoiler" For Upcoming Episodes of This Is Us

This past week, This Is Us unleashed its midseason finale, and it wasn't without its shocking cliffhangers. With a history of heartbreaking twists, it shouldn't have come as a surprise. But that didn't make it hurt any less. Hoping to get some answers, we caught up with actress Susan Kelechi Watson at Sunday night's Critics' Choice Awards in LA. Watson, as you know, plays Beth, and she offered her take on the show's heartbreaks, teased what's to come with a cheeky "spoiler," and opened up about the show's inherent inclusivity.

POPSUGAR: What makes the show so heartbreaking?

Susan Kelechi Watson: There's always so much goodness that the writers are creating . . . It's sort of the American story. And you want to make sure we're all included. And I think they do that mostly by telling the truth, as we see, and being unafraid and unashamed to be normal and everyday. But they just sort of magnify the parts of life that kind of may throw you for a loop or make you stop or make you reconsider. We just get to play human beings. Day in and day out, and maybe that's the attraction to it.

PS: What can you tell us about the episodes to come?

SKW: Beth survives. [Laughs]

PS: This Is Us is so spectacular, because it really includes a diverse set of stories. What's it been like to be on the forefront of more inclusivity in television?

SKW: I think it's utterly ridiculous that people who are good at what they do are judged, as Martin Luther King said, "not by the content of their character, but by the color of their skin." You know, by their ethnicity. That's just not logic to me. And, as a black woman in America, I have felt the brunt of that ignorance most days of my life, and it's no small thing. So, I love that I'm seeing a lot of people here that pioneer this thing called diversity in Hollywood. And I love that I'm a part of it.
