8 Reasons Wednesday Addams Is My Soulless Sister

Wednesday Addams is one of the most iconic onscreen characters. Perhaps I'm biased because, well, I am Wednesday. As someone who is easily scared, it's surprising how much I relate to her and enjoy the Addams Family films. Between Thing — the disembodied hand that occasionally wriggles into my nightmares — and Cousin Itt, I have multiple reasons to avoid the movies. But I've always been captivated by the family's confident dissent, especially Wednesday. Her comebacks, jaded aura, and general disdain for people is oddly commendable. I mean, what child is bold enough to demand someone's immortal soul? Give the girl her props! Keep reading to see why I consider Wednesday my soulless sister.

She's not the most affectionate person.

She's not the most affectionate person.

Just like Wednesday, I've never been a touchy-feely person. In fact, my mom sometimes wonders if she hugged me enough as a child (she did, trust me). I just really enjoy personal space. I'm not against showing amity or intimacy to some degree, but it takes me a while to warm up to the idea. And that has no bearing on my kindness — I promise I'm very nice!

02
She's not afraid to call people out.

She's not afraid to call people out.

Wednesday is an expert at putting people in check, and I fully support it. I'm a laid-back person until I see any sort of wrongdoing or until someone pushes my buttons. If anyone steps out of bounds, I calmly — and respectfully — tell them to fall back.

03
She was happily aboard the single train.

She was happily aboard the single train.

Sure, Wednesday eventually has a thing with her fellow camper Joel Glicker (David Krumholtz), but she isn't constantly pining after his attention; it's actually the other way around. Meanwhile, Wednesday is living her best Hot Girl life and being about her business — a mentality I most definitely relate to.

04
She wants a man who can match her energy.

She wants a man who can match her energy.

We don't talk enough about Wednesday's potent line, "I'd pity him" after Joel asks if she's met a man who would be her "devoted slave." Not every woman wants to be constantly flattered or idolized. Loved? Yes. Respected? Of course. But fawned over? It's a no for me. I'd rather be in a coequal relationship in which we share the same rank of importance.

05
She's socially aware.

She's socially aware.

Who could forget Wednesday's iconic Thanksgiving Day speech? She exposes the problematic nature of the holiday with a powerful monologue about the pain and abuse Native Americans suffered in the country's early history. "Years from now my people will be forced to live in mobile homes on reservations. Your people will wear cardigans, and drink highballs," she says. "We will sell our bracelets by the roadsides, you will play golf, and enjoy hot hors d'oeuvres. My people will have pain and degradation . . . And for all these reasons I have decided to scalp you and burn your village to the ground." Someone had to say it!

06
She knows what she's capable of.

She knows what she's capable of.

Wednesday is often underestimated in the Addams Family movies because she's just a little girl. But she packs a lot of punch and isn't afraid to prove her power. Whether she's bartering a clean room for a woman's immortal soul or demanding salt from Uncle Fester, she says what she wants and expects nothing less.

07
She scares people.

She scares people.

Wednesday's "don't f*ck with me" attitude remains unmatched, but I have been told on multiple occasions that I have a sort of "quiet rage." (TBH, I take that as a compliment.) I never understood what that meant until I scared off a creepy man with a single look when he tried to get my attention on an NYC street. As soon as I heard his catcalls and saw him approaching from my peripheral, I whirled around and gave him a death glare so intense, his eyes widened and mouth dropped before he said, "Uh, never mind." I'll never forget that glorious look of terror.

08
Showing emotion is not her forte.

Showing emotion is not her forte.

Like Wednesday, I'm not great at showing emotion, and it's not always intentional. Sometimes my feelings don't physically take shape, and it makes me hard to read. I can be jumping up and down in excitement on the inside while cracking a very vague smile on the outside. But I can assure you, somewhere deep down, I have (*gulps*) feelings.
