Lawyer Erin Bruner (Laura Linney) is tasked with defending Reverend Moore (Tom Wilkinson), who has been charged with the death of a young girl, Emily (Jennifer Carpenter), whom he claims was demonically possessed. As prosecutor Ethan Thomas (Campbell Scott) argues that Emily was simply suffering from schizophrenia and should have been treated by medical professionals, the film shows flashbacks of what might have happened to Emily, and what actually did. As Erin gets deeper and deeper into the case, she unravels a story that can't be neatly packed away or explained by science.
