What the Cast of Mr. Robot Has Revealed About the "Risky" Second Season

Don't freak out, but season two of Mr. Robot begins just a couple of weeks from now. We'll finally find out what happens to Elliot after he — spoiler alert — realizes that Mr. Robot (aka his father figure) is really a figment of his imagination! We'll see the fallout from the major hack at the end of season one! All will be revealed! Frankly, I'm just excited to see the crazy-talented Rami Malek back onscreen. Before the show comes back, make sure you're versed on how season one ends, get a sneak peek at the upcoming flashback, and keep reading to find out exactly what the cast has said about season two.

Slater has remained cagey about what's coming up next (understandable, since his character is the subject of season one's biggest twist). He did talk to Collider about how the dynamic will change between Mr. Robot and Elliot in season two: "I am there as his partner, as his protector, and as his enemy. I'm there sometimes for the right reasons and sometimes for the wrong reasons. It's a continual struggle between the two of us. It turns into a real psychological journey for Elliot."

In the same interview with Collider, Malek teased where Elliot finds himself after he realizes that Mr. Robot is in his head: "It changes him, entirely . . . I happened to know where [Elliot] was headed this season, so I took some big changes and I think the audience will be rewarded by them. Maybe they’ll end up on the editing floor, but that remains to be seen."

By far the most information we've gotten from the cast is from Entertainment Weekly's recent cover story. "He's pretty psychologically f*cked when we start," Malek said. When the season picks up, Elliot is living at home with his mother, a less-than-ideal situation, according to Malek. "Being around his mother, as negative as it has been in the past, allows Elliot to be reminded that he has a home and that that world exists. As bad as it was, there is a world that exists outside of his compromised memory that he can trust."

At least Malek trusts creator Sam Esmail and teased that this season won't let fans down: "When he presented this second season to me, I said 'Really? This is where you're going with this?' I was a little skeptical, and then I thought 'Every time you were skeptical of anything in the first season, he proved you wrong.' I think he's going to shock a lot of people. It's as intelligent and risky as the first season."

Carly Chaikin

While she didn't give away too much, Chaikin got straight to the point in an interview with Racked: "We pick up right where we left off — it's a few weeks after the hack, dealing with the aftermath of what's happened. In terms of my character, this season we really get to see all the different layers of who Darlene is, and why she's doing what she's doing. This season answers a lot of questions, but it's going to leave you with so many more!"

Portia Doubleday

"Angela is kind of in the lion's den in season two," Doubleday said in her interview with the USA Network. "It opens with her just getting acclimated to corporate America and that lifestyle and that energy. I think for her, what matters most is that she actually wants to make a difference and she'll go to any extent to get there — and maybe it means compromising her morals in a certain situation that will garner a better consequence for something else . . . that is continuously her struggle in this season."

Martin Wallström

Martin Wallström

Wallström, aka Tyrell Wellick, recently spoke to Deadline about season two as a whole: "I can promise you — and I can quote Sam — that it's going to be a lot darker and the effect of the 5/9 hack will be more revealed to the audience."

Creator Sam Esmail

Creator Sam Esmail

Earlier this year, Esmail dropped a few breadcrumbs about the new season at PaleyFest, saying, "There will be a lot more backstory that will be shown, and the timeline will get a little clearer. Not a hundred percent clearer, but a little clearer . . . Elliot committed a crime in the first season, and we're going to see ramifications of that in the second season."

The ever-cryptic Esmail also told EW that the new season is "10 times better than the first season." We'll just have to trust him!
