Sarah Lancashire stars as Catherine Cawood in British crime drama Happy Valley. Despite being a thick-skinned police sergeant, Catherine has had a tough break. Her teenaged daughter gave birth to a son, Ryan, after being raped and then committed suicide, unable to cope. Her sister, who she lives with, is a recovering alcoholic and heroin addict. Furthermore, her husband divorced her, and he and their son refuse to acknowledge young Ryan as family. Yet, Catherine puts all of that aside when her daughter's rapist, Tommy Lee Royce (played by War & Peace's James Norton) is out of prison and involved in a possible kidnapping. She goes on a mission to rescue Royce's victims and put him away for good, but her personal connection to the case causes unforeseen complications.
