The basic structure is actually really similar to "Mean Girls": an unpopular outsider (here, it's Ryder's Veronica) stumbles into "friendship" with a clique of mean girls (the Heathers) led by one mean-spirited queen bee, then she falls for a guy who seems perfect for her. Where "Mean Girls" just goes on a series of pranks that harm reputations and feelings, "Heathers" takes things a step further, with a literal murder spree that only Veronica has a chance of stopping.
