Ryan Murphy's The Politician: Every Star You'll See in the Upcoming Netflix Series

Ryan Murphy's first project for Netflix is nearly here, you guys. So far, The Politician has been described as a comedy that follows a young, wealthy high school student (Ben Platt) from Santa Barbara who aspires to enter politics, and the series will reportedly feature musical numbers in each episode. Regardless of how you feel about the plot, the cast should be enough to convince you to watch — Platt, Jessica Lange, Gwyneth Paltrow, Lucy Boynton, and Zoey Deutch are just some of the exciting names attached to the series. Check out the full list of Murphy's next batch of muses ahead, and then see all the first-look images that have been released so far.

Ben Platt

Ben Platt recently wrapped up his Tony-winning run in Broadway's Dear Evan Hansen, but that's not the first time the 25-year-old's voice has gotten attention — he also starred as Benji in Pitch Perfect. Needless to say, Murphy's choice to cast him as the titular "politician," wealthy high school student Payton Hobart, in his new show is pretty genius.

Jessica Lange

Lange is a longtime favorite of Murphy's (for obvious reasons), so we're thrilled to see she'll be a part of this series. Details about her character have yet to be released, but in the first-look images Netflix shared, she's rocking a big blonde wig and some '80s-inspired ensembles.

Gwyneth Paltrow

Paltrow and Murphy go way back — she appeared in multiple episodes of Glee and married Murphy's production partner Brad Falchuk — so teaming up with him again makes total sense. Judging from the first season's photos, she appears to be playing Platt's character's mother.

Laura Dreyfuss

Starring in The Politician will reunite Laura Dreyfuss with her Dear Evan Hansen costar Platt, as well as Murphy (the Broadway star played Madison McCarthy in the sixth season of Glee). Details about her character are still scarce, but she'll likely be playing one of Payton Hobart's classmates.

Lucy Boynton

Now that Lucy Boynton has made a mark on Hollywood with her role in the Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, she's pivoting to TV. The English actress is set to play one of Payton's classmates, and also appears to be a ruthless rival in the competition for student body president.

Zoey Deutch

After charming everyone in Netflix rom-com Set It Up, Zoey Deutch joined Murphy's project with the streaming giant. Although she hasn't been on Broadway like Platt and Dreyfuss, she does show off her singing chops in a Dirty Grandpa scene with Zac Efron, which has to count for something.

McDermott also revealed that former Mad Men star January Jones is set to play his wife.

Like most of the rest of the cast, information about Midler's character is still very much under wraps. But leave it to Murphy to get yet another Hollywood icon in this cast!

The Wormwood star will also pop up in Murphy's series in an undisclosed role, so keep your eyes peeled!
