My 9 Favorite Moments From the Schitt's Creek Holiday Special, Which Is a Masterpiece

Ever since Parks and Recreation took its final, hilarious bow in 2015, I've been in search of a show that fills me with as much unmitigated joy, happy tears, and quotable one-liners. Fortunately, Schitt's Creek checks all those boxes, with a serious dash of couture thrown in. And because we deserved at least one nice thing in 2018, I now have a Schitt's Creek Christmas episode to warm my cold, dead heart over the holidays.

In the special, which is a delightfully Schitty emotional roller coaster as only this series can pull off, I found myself tearing up as much as I full-on howled with laughter — legit howled, people, that's how good it is. "A Schitt's Creek Christmas" begins with Johnny's glorious flashback to the Rose family's lavish Christmas Eve parties of yore, complete with glitz, glamour, and Moira's impressive collection of pills. As a way to create new memories, the Rose patriarch tries to get his wife and children to help him arrange a last-minute party in their motel room, which all goes horribly wrong . . . until it doesn't. (Isn't there something wonderful about watching a series that's as cuttingly funny as it is full of heart?)

Although Johnny's festive enthusiasm takes a little while to spread to his loved ones — Alexis has a tough time forgetting about their old holiday party's "Reindeer Room," which I now desperately need to see — the misadventures everyone takes on their way to the emotional conclusion are everything I ever could have hoped for from the Roses. Take a peek at the highlights ahead.

Moira and David's "Number"

Moira and David's "Number"

Remember when Moira uncharacteristically finds herself unwilling to hit the stage to perform during the season four episode "Asbestos Fest"? And then David suggests the two of them perform "The Number" together instead? And then Alexis mentions that they used to perform it every year at the Rose Christmas parties? Well, we get a fabulous look at Moira and David and David's flat-ironed hair belting it out in their mansion in the holiday special. It's a real treat.

A Stavros Sighting!

Alexis remains largely in the background of the flashbacks to the fancy holiday party, but it's who she's standing next to that caught my eye: Stavros! Before she sprints off to party on his father's yacht, we all get a brief glimpse of Alexis's mysterious paramour, who's been brought up over and over again throughout the series but never seen.

Paul Shaffer's Cameo

Who better to play the piano while Moira and David perform "The Number" than Paul Shaffer? The Canadian musician, who's best known as David Letterman's musical director, has a fun cameo in the flashback, during which he cracks a joke about Moira having a better voice than Aretha Franklin (who's also performing at the party — naturally).

Remember Don and Bev?

In season two, Johnny and Moira are shocked to run into their former friends Don and Bev at a restaurant in Elmdale. Long before their awkward encounter, however, they were fixtures at the Rose's Christmas Eve bash, as you can see here.

The Rose Family Portrait

The Rose Family Portrait

To be fair, it's not hard to spot the family's infamous family portrait, given it's massive size, but it was still a welcome little Easter egg in the background of the flashback. As you might recall, the portrait makes its first appearance in the pilot, when the distraught family sits in front of it in shock, and then pops up again for a hilarious storyline in season three.

The "Release" of the "Tree"

The "Release" of the "Tree"

Moira agrees to accompany Johnny to a nearby barn to purchase a tree from Ray, who happily informs them that he's charging exorbitant amounts for even the smallest, lamest of trees due to supply and demand. So the Roses end up taking home a dinky little tree that is honestly more like a loose collection of twigs. Never is that more apparent than in the scene when David, Alexis, and Moira beg Johnny to "release the tree" from its wrapping so he'll feel more in the spirit of Christmas, and it . . . completely falls apart. It also has a "charred" back, according to Ted. (This is the scene when I howled with laughter, FYI.)

The Eggnog

As someone who has a deep hatred for eggnog, the scene of Moira exclaiming, "Oh, there's no booze in that!" after tasting Johnny's drink is a personal fave. Her repeated shouts of "Eww!" afterward are a close second.

The "Gift" Exchange

The "Gift" Exchange

As the family cleans up, Johnny surprises everyone by letting them know he got them gifts. When they excitedly run up, however, he says he actually picked them up at the church's rummage sale that morning (David's eyebrow arch is just *chef's kiss*). Not only does Moira mistake the antique tin her husband picked out for her for "a bomb," but Alexis also thinks the pad of stamps Johnny gives her are "stickers . . . of old men?" It's her second best line of the episode, since "No one wants to go caroling in front of Mom's wig wall!" takes the cake.
