6 Questions We're Hoping Get Answered on Season 2 of Netflix's Ratched

Ryan Murphy's highly anticipated One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest prequel, Ratched, premiered on Sept. 18, and it's already been renewed for season two! Although there's no word yet on what we can expect, we've already formed our own theories (and questions) in the meantime.

The first season sees Mildred Ratched's rise to head nurse at the Lucia State Hospital, her reunion with her murderous "brother" Edmund Tolleson, and her acceptance of her true self. Just as Mildred seemingly gets her happy ending, she receives a phone call from Edmund saying that he's coming to kill her. While we patiently wait for the premiere of season two, ahead are a few questions we need answered.

01
Will Mildred Ratched's Dreams About Edmund Tolleson Come True?
Netflix

Will Mildred Ratched's Dreams About Edmund Tolleson Come True?

Season one ends with Edmund discovering the location of Mildred's hideaway in Mexico. She continuously has nightmares about him coming to get her and killing her as ruthlessly as he murdered the priests in episode one. In the three years since Edmund's escape from the hospital, he's grown resentful of Mildred, believing he betrayed her — she had plans of killing him in a humane way so he could avoid the electric chair, but he doesn't see it in the same light.

He continues down the path of evil, murdering a number of nurses in Chicago to garner Mildred's attentions and to let her know she's next. The question remains, will season two see them meeting again? And will Mildred be prepared to kill Edmund once and for all, even if it isn't in the most humane way possible?

02
Is Gwendolyn Briggs's Cancer Really Gone?
Netflix

Is Gwendolyn Briggs's Cancer Really Gone?

Gwendolyn's resolve is certainly tested throughout Ratched's first season. She had the near-death experience after being shot by Dolly and then she discovered she had terminal cancer, which ended up not being terminal. While we'd like to think Gwendolyn and Mildred could stay happy in Mexico, something tells us their story is going to end in tears. After all, how is Mildred supposed to fully transform into the Nurse Ratched we know from One Flew Over a Cuckoo's Nest if she's in a happy relationship? Even if her cancer doesn't return, by being in a relationship with Mildred, Gwendolyn's life is in danger if Edmund catches up to them.

03
Will Charlotte Wells Realize What She's Doing?
Netflix

Will Charlotte Wells Realize What She's Doing?

Charlotte Wells suffers from dissociative identity disorder, a result of a traumatic incident where she was abducted and held captive for days. Only Dr. Richard Hanover manages to get through to her and when he triggers an episode, Charlotte ends up killing him. In the final episode, it seems that any trace of Charlotte is gone and one of her darker identities has taken hold. She joins Edmund and Louise on a murder spree, but all hope is not lost. We've seen Charlotte take control before and it's possible she can do so again. Maybe she'll be the downfall of Edmund in a future season?

04
Will Betsy Bucket Find Love?
Netflix

Will Betsy Bucket Find Love?

It's hard to root for Nurse Betsy Bucket — that is, until Dr. Hanover thoroughly decimates her character at the dance. From that moment on, we see her less as an antagonist to Mildred and more as a poor soul that doesn't truly know her place in the world. By the season finale, Betsy is friends with both Gwendolyn and Mildred and joins them at the Mexican resort. She knows about all the skeletons in their closets and doesn't exactly care as they've benefitted her. The only thing she doesn't have is love. Will there be a new paramour in her life? Or, is she destined to live alone and throw herself into her work? What we do know is that her former friend Louise is now a part of Edmund's gang and this could possibly lead to Betsy's destruction.

05
Will Governor George Wilburn Face Any Repercussions?
Netflix

Will Governor George Wilburn Face Any Repercussions?

Even though he's not evil in the same sense as Edmund or Charlotte, Governor Wilburn still manages to be one of the antagonists for season one. A boorish blowhard, the governor has an agenda and nothing matters so long as he gets reelected. He even lets a man on death row burn to death in front of our very eyes in a sadistic show of power. We don't get to see whether or not he's reelected at the end of the season, but we do know he fires Gwendolyn.

It'd be nice to see him face repercussions for his mishandling of the hospital, his treatment of the electric chair, and for firing Gwendolyn, even if it is just through humiliation and not murder. Although, Edmund murdering the governor would be somewhat poetic since he was so hell-bent on having Edmund face the electric chair.

Will Mildred Ratched Join Another Hospital?
Netflix

Will Mildred Ratched Join Another Hospital?

After leaving Lucia State Hospital, Mildred takes a sabbatical with Gwendolyn due to the money she receives from Lenore Osgood. Although the money is a hefty sum, Mildred does love helping people in her own weird way. With the knowledge that Edmund knows where she is, perhaps she and Gwendolyn will leave Mexico and take on new identities on the East coast. Mildred doesn't have any formal training as a nurse and now that she has money, and some experience, it might be time to get said training. If she doesn't join another psychiatric hospital, maybe we'll see her as a nursing student?
