9 Stylish American Women Who Married Royals
Imagine meeting your future husband (aka your prince charming) and he actually turns out to be a prince. Well, for these nine lucky women, that was actually the case. Meghan Markle has already got people buzzing about her relationship with Prince Harry, having accompanied him to a wedding in Jamaica wearing a dazzling maxi dress.
People are already speculating whether the couple might get married in the near future. If that were the case, Markle wouldn't be the first American woman to marry into a royal family. In fact, some of the most fashionable non-royals who have married princes are American. From Grace Kelly to Lee Radziwill, have a look back at nine fashionable American women who have style fit for a queen.
Grace Kelly, Princess of Monaco
Grace Kelly, or Princess Grace as she was known, is perhaps one of the most fashionable royals on this list. Born in Philadelphia, Grace went on to Hollywood where she most notably won an Academy Award for best actress for her role in The Country Girl. In 1956 Kelly married Monaco’s Prince Rainier III and officially became a princess. To this day, Grace is still considered a fashion icon for her love of midi dresses featuring a nipped waistline and full skirt. She even inspired Hermès to name the 'Kelly' bag after her.
Wallis Simpson, Duchess of Windsor
A lot can be said of Wallis Simpson, the Duchess of Windsor's relationships and, of course, her chic style. Wallis Simpson would have been the queen of England if King Edward VIII of England hadn't abdicated in order to marry her. Simpson officially became royalty when she married Prince Edward, Duke of Windsor making her the Duchess of Windsor. Wallis loved haute couture designers and was even friendly with the Hubert de Givenchy.
Kendra Spears, Princess Salwa Aga Khan
Kendra Spears has been in the fashion community for some time now modeling for brands like Prada, Chanel, and Yves Saint Laurent. The Seattle native then went on to become Princess Salwa Aga Khan when she married Prince Rahim Aga Khan in 2013. Kendra still continues to model and is known to mix affordable brands with couture.
Lisa Halaby, Queen Noor of Jordan
Born in Princeton, New Jersey, Lisa Halaby was working at Royal Jordanian Airlines when she met King Hussein of Jordan. The couple wed in 1978 and were together until the King Hussein passed away in 1999. Queen Noor’s style is full of fitted blazers and tailored dresses.
Rita Hayworth was a star in her own right before she married Prince Aly Khan, son of the Aga Khan. The Hollywood actress captivated the audience with her femme fatale roles, her dazzling personality, and sultry style.
Marie-Chantal Miller, Crown Princess of Greece
Marie-Chantal Miller was a duty-free shopping heiress and one of the three famous Miller sisters (Alexandra is also on our list). In 1995, she became a princess when she married Pavlos, the Crown Prince of Greece whose father was the deposed king of Greece. Marie-Chantal is a regular on the fashion circuit as you can see from her appearance at the 2015 Vanity Fair Oscar Party, where she wore a dazzling white gown.
Diane von Fürstenberg, formerly Princess Diane of Fürstenberg
Did you know that before she started her fashion company, Diane von Fürstenberg was actually a princess? Diane’s former husband was Prince Egon von Fürstenberg from Germany. Needless to say, DVF went on to change the fashion world with the creation of her wrap dress and her eponymous label.
Alexandra von Fürstenberg, formerly Princess Alexandra von Fürstenberg
The next person on our list happens to be DVF’s former daughter-in-law. Alexandra Miller (whose sister is Princess Marie-Chantal of Greece) married Diane’s son Prince Alexander von Fürstenberg back in 1995. At one point, Alexandra even worked for DVF. No wonder she has such impeccable style. Alexandra now runs her own furniture company.
Jackie Kennedy’s younger sister Lee Radziwill married Polish Prince Stanislaw Albrecht Radziwill in 1959. Lee's sense of style constantly landed her on best dressed lists, and she still makes appearances at events to this day. She’s best known for her sophisticated style, which includes statement jackets and dresses.
