"Glass Onion"'s Costume Designer Breaks Down Madelyn Cline's Festival-Girl Outfits
Madelyn Cline broke the internet when she raced into the frame, mascara streaking down her cheeks, in the now-viral Cult Gaia cutout dress in "Glass Onion." As Whiskey — Duke Cody's (Dave Bautista) plus-one — her vacation wardrobe is flawless. From her gold bikini to the two-piece wrap set she wears when the group first land on Miles Bron's (Edward Norton) private island, Whiskey's outfits paint the ideal image of a festival girl trapped in a murder mystery.
"There's just this wonderful confidence about her."
"We were trying to figure out what her background was and who she was and how she was entering this fray of crazies," the film's costume designer, Jenny Eagan, tells POPSUGAR. "And we just came to this realization that she was putting on an air." The definition of Instagrammable, Whiskey's look gives off a "relaxed, chill, no-worries-in-the-world vibe," Eagan says. Though she still wants to impress the wealthier and more influential members of the group.
"[Maddie] knows the game she's playing," Eagan says of working with Cline. "There's just this wonderful confidence about her." Eagan adds that she often gave Cline the freedom to style her own jewelry and have the final say on Whiskey's accessories. In the end, Cline's personal sense of style helped solidify Whiskey's character. "It's really fun to be able to work with people like that, where they just come in with excitement, knowing it's going to be so much fun," Eagan says.
As Detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) attempts to identify the killer, he hones in on the most suspicious characters like Birdie Jay (Kate Hudson), a supermodel turned fashion designer with a motive. But Whiskey's free-spirited character, and her equally whimsical wardrobe, turns out to be a key puzzle piece in Blanc's investigation.
Ahead, read how Eagan selected some of Whiskey's most iconic outfits and shop similar pieces from Cline's onscreen wardrobe.
Whiskey's Cult Gaia Midi Dress
Most of Whiskey's outfits are straight off the rack, but Eagan and her team took time to augment each piece. On Cline's Cult Gaia dress, they added elastic to the dip at the base of the back cutout. The practical alteration made the piece more comfortable to move in.
Copious amounts of broken glass in certain scenes made it impossible for the actor to go barefoot (see: her Sam Edelman wrap sandals). The delicate jewelry and effortless styling, though, make it seem like she's barefoot as she drifts between throwing back cocktails and running for her life.
During one of the film's most climactic scenes, Blanc points out that Whiskey is a Taurus. As the camera pans to Cline, we see her wearing the Cult Gaia Serita dress and a custom zodiac necklace from Crowe Jewelry. The necklace is a small but crucial detail that ultimately helps Blanc nail down a culprit.
While Cline's necklace is bespoke, most of her accessories are a pastiche of pieces sourced in the US and Greece: Jennifer Fisher hoops and rings plucked from mall kiosks, vintage Maya Jewelry embedded with turquoise stones, and a chic body chain.

Whiskey's Metallic Gold Bikini and White Sarong
One of Whiskey's most memorable fashion moments occurs when she's lounging poolside with Miles and Blanc. As the group's youngest member, she's in on every style trend. Showcasing Whiskey's sartorial savvy, the costume designer dressed Cline in an elegant gold bikini and a Norma Kamali sarong. Like Cline's metallic ensemble, the entire cast's swimsuits have a story worth telling.

Whiskey's 2-Piece Cream Set and Fringe Boots
Balancing out Birdie's peacock gowns and Andi's vibrant wrap dresses, Whiskey's color palette is noticeably neutral. "Most people [in 'Glass Onion'] are a little bit more dressed up than they normally would be, but I just thought it was really fun, the glamour," Eagan says. "I just love the glamour."
"I think they're just so fun and they just pair with anything."
When she first meets up with Duke's crew, Whiskey is wearing an all-white ensemble. Upon closer inspection, the outfit is a Toluca crop top from Italian brand Temptation Positano paired with cream denim shorts from Zara. Eagan styled the look with a See by Chloé fringe purse and recycled fringe boots from Donald Pliner.
"I think they're just so fun and they just pair with anything," Eagan says of Whiskey's boots. "You could put on a skirt, you could put on some jean shorts, and it just picks it up a little bit. [They have] that little bit of an edge to them."
The assortment of international pieces adds a worldliness to Whiskey's character. Her carefree spirit and desire to stay on trend make her difficult to ignore in any scene. But Eagan's favorite part about Whiskey's wardrobe is the balance between flair and accessibility. She adds, "It's very achievable for anyone."
