Fitness Takes Over Fashion Week
When an athletic brand chooses to show at Fashion Week, you know it won't be a simple stroll down the runway. Athleta showed that being fit can be fashionable too when it premiered its first fashion show during New York Fashion Week with a wild, heart-pumping performance that offered a new spin on the traditional runway.
Instead of the usual runway models, dancers and athletes performed numbers that ranged from parkour to trampoline to contemporary dance. "Athletes come in every shape and size, so you have to have clothes that function for that," said Nancy Taylor, Athleta's senior director of design. "I love showcasing healthy, fit women."
The dancers' moves were mesmerizing to watch, especially the backflips and break dancing, and offered proof that the clothes are not only comfortable to wear but can also withstand a good workout. Though I couldn't see each piece up close, the range of options made it clear that women could wear the pieces no matter what activity they choose to do. "A woman should be comfortable and confident, she can go down to the supermarket, have a cup of coffee," Taylor explained. "It's the piece that she wants to put on five days a week. She can't wash it enough because it's the perfect piece for her life."
The show included pieces from Fall and Winter as well as some coming next Spring. The look? Bold tops and wildly patterned leggings and bottoms that seemed trendy with a slightly edgy vibe.
