Best Way to Wash Workout Clothes

Get the Funk Out! The Best Ways to Wash Workout Clothes

Sometimes throwing workout clothes in the washing machine isn't enough to get them clean. Sweat and dirt can stain fitness gear, and if not washed properly, clothing will remain smelly even after the rinse cycle. If you struggle to get rid of gnarly stenches from your fitness clothes, follow these tips to get gear so fresh and so clean.

  • If your clothes are drenched in sweat post-workout, wash them immediately after wearing them. If you don't have a washing machine nearby, hand wash them. This is the best way to stop stains and smells from setting.
  • If you want to wash your clothes later, hang them up to dry instead of tossing them in your laundry hamper. Bunched up, wet clothes can harbor stinky mildew spores that are tough to get rid of in one wash.
  • Soak your stinky or soiled items in one part vinegar to four parts water for 30 minutes to disinfect and loosen stains before putting clothes in the washing machine. Be careful not to mix vinegar with bleach. If your detergent has bleach, simply rinse the clothes in fresh water before putting them in the washing machine.
  • Wash clothes in the hottest water the garment can stand with half-part baking soda and half-part detergent to kill odor-causing bacteria and remove soap scum and stains.
  • Try washing your clothes with a detergent designed to treat fitness and sport clothing, like Tide plus Febreze Freshness Sport.
  • If your clothes can take it, dry on the hottest setting of your dryer. As an alternative, hang wet garments outside in direct sunlight to kill any remaining bacteria.
  • If all else fails, it might be time for you to toss those items out and buy something new.

Soak in dettol antiseptic solution and detergent. Rinse clean and use softener. Dry them under the sun. Works like a charm.

I live outside the US and go to a gym with no air conditioning. My sports bras smell and no amount of washing helps. So I wear my clothes as long as possible. Buying where I live isn't an option b/c the imported sports gears costs and arm and a leg.

The BEST stuff I have found to clean the stank out of my workout clothes is WIN High Performance Detergent. This stuff is amazing. Even got the reek out of my ancient fleece slippers. It does not smell that great in the bottle, but my poly & poly-blend sweaty clothes come out of the wash fresh and sweet. Not good on natural fibers, though.

If you wash your clothes with Vodka won't you smell like an alky? Or does the vodka small jsut rinse away? I've never heard that before! I'm not tempted to try it though cause I just would end up drinking it instead! No need to waste good vodka on clothes! *Belch*

When I was walking at lunch every day, I ended up bringing in a whole other set of clothes to wear so I didn't get sweaty. But I didn't get stinky in them. I left them here all week, then brought them home fridays to wash over the weekend. Still brought clean undies and socks, though! That would really be gross! Makes me kinda glad I don't do the gym.

Yes, I absolutely agree, the body odour is VERY disgusting. Some people have only one set of training clothes and they don't have so much laundry every day to wash so they skip the washing and use the same clothes again. But my god, please use other clothes then.

Well I don't have daily access to a washing machine (got to love SF and no washing machine in building) and its wasteful to wash a t-shirt and track pants alone. So I use the dancer/Madonna trick and rinse my gym clothes out with Vodka. It gets the sweat and sink out and evaporates. Then when I get the the laundramat my gym togs are not so horrid. It's has to be good to excellent vodka (absolut or better). it tried lousy cheap vodka from a corner store and it didn't work but went to Costco and bought the huge bottle of plain absolut. Works like a dream on the gym clothes any all delicates with sweat stains and smells.

Another pet peeve- some times people try to cover it up with a spray or perfume, which is even worst! I cant be busting my butt on a machine and have an asthma attack because someone is swimming in stinky perfume and sweat next to me....I hate that!! You still stink and you are literally going to kill me ;) there is no need for perfume that strong at the gym!

Isn't it awful? I guess some people just don't care or it doesn't bother them. I wouldn't be able to stand my own stink, and would be bad making others put up with it.

Ugh, a friend of mine wers the same gym clothes for a month. He won;t listen to us and change his habits, so none of us will go to the gym with him anymore. In fact, we won't even hang out with him after he's been because that nasty stink sticks to him. It's seriously gross.
