Can Stress Make You Tired?

You May Not Have Realized This Other Awful Side Effect of Being Stressed

As women, we all probably endure stress at some level. Among work, kids, and maintaining a well-run house, we have a lot going on. We feel like clowns — trying to juggle everything. Only, our lives are not an act, and it stresses us out. Self-care is often disregarded because we don't squeeze in time for ourselves. Instead, we put ourselves on autopilot and go through the daily tasks that every single day brings. The stress piles up like a stack of books. And as we know, it affects our bodies, too. I can personally feel the anxiety in my neck and shoulders because I stiffen right up when I am stressed about something in particular. But have you ever wondered if stress can actually make you tired?

As Drew Hildebrandt, a physician's assistant at the University of Michigan, said to POPSUGAR, "Acute or chronic stress can lead to many physical and mental issues that can have many long-term detrimental issues." This is one reason so many women have such a hard time falling and staying asleep at night. We just can't turn our minds off. We think about our to-do lists and even our worries. Hildebrandt continued, "Sleep deprivation is a major concern resulting from stress. Sleep is imperative for cognitive function and is one of the most important aspects of human well-being." There you have it. Ladies, we need our sleep.

Yes, stress can get in the way of individuals getting their proper sleep. But as you see, it's vital that we do everything in our power to get that shut-eye. If there's too much on your plate, pitch some of it. Be sure you're taking care of yourself because no one else can do that for you. Do your best to flick that switch to "off" before sliding into your bed tonight and reap the benefits of less stress and more sleep.
