Peloton Instructor Tunde Oyeneyin's Must Haves: From Sauna Blankets to Drugstore Mascara
As a Peloton instructor, author, motivational speaker, and even former makeup artist, Tunde Oyeneyin is no stranger to all things beauty and wellness. You can catch her on the bike and the mat on the Peloton App, where she's known to give you a tough workout with a healthy dose of motivation and inspiration, as well as a pretty epic playlist, if we do say so ourselves. We got the chance to talk with her about all her wellness routines, some health goals for 2023, and why everyone should be taking their recovery more seriously.
Oneyeyin's mornings are an important way to start the day on the right foot, especially as a fitness instructor. When asked about her morning routine, she says, "I snuggle with my dog Caesar. I really try to stay off my phone for 30 minutes to an hour. I drink water. And then when I finally grab my phone and I look at my day and what's ahead. If I'm not teaching that morning, then I like to get in a workout. If I am teaching that morning, then I usually spend the two or three hours that I have before going into class on emails, or programming the next day's class." Speaking of programming classes, we had to know about a dream artist ride she's yet to teach, and she did not disappoint. "Drake would be so awesome, or Drake and Rihanna." We would like to manifest that mashup ride for 2023.
Not only does Oyeneyin give us a major workout, she also has great taste in products. We got to learn about everything she uses to support her packed schedule and physically-demanding career, and spoiler alert: we want to buy it all. From the plant protein she uses every single day to the sauna blanket that's a key part of her recovery routine, keep on reading to shop all her top picks!
Tunde Oyeneyin's Affordable Must Have: Revlon So Fierce! Eyes Wide Open Mascara
If you've ever seen Oyeneyin, you know she always looks gorgeous, and we had to know the secret behind her look on and off the bike. Thankfully, this Revlon So Fierce! Eyes Wide Open Mascara ($9, originally $11) is super affordable, and she loves it because "it packs a punch, it lengthens, it volumizes. You don't need a ton of coats to get a lot of bang. It does exactly what it says, eyes wide open." She prefers the non-waterproof formula to the waterproof version. We also asked her about her makeup philosophy while teaching, and she noted, "the way that I look at it is I am on live television, I'm showing up to work, and I feel like when you show up to work you should show up at your best. And so you better believe I have a full face of makeup on. Now when I am at home getting a run on the treadmill at nine at night do I have makeup on? No. I don't have makeup on when doing my workout at home . . . But yeah, I definitely come with my face forward when I'm teaching a class."
Pro tip: Though Oyeneyin loves her makeup, when asked about the secret to a gorgeous look, her answer was simple. "I'm a huge advocate of skincare . . . I was a makeup artist for 15 years, and I know that the most beautiful thing about any makeup is always going to be the skin and . . . what you prep the skin with. My makeup routine starts with skincare."
Tunde Oyeneyin's Investment Must Have: HigherDOSE Infrared Sauna Blanket
Yes, this HigherDOSE Infrared Sauna Blanket ($599) is certainly a splurge, but Oyeneyin says it's definitely one worth purchasing. She likes to use it at night, with her "sweats on, and you plug it into your wall. I usually just do it while I'm laying on the couch or on the floor in the living room. I get emails done, or I watch TV. It's kind of a two birds, one stone type of deal. I probably do a 20 to 30-minute session." Not only is the blanket awesome for getting a great sweat in, it's also something she "uses right before bed. It gets me in the mood for bed." This sauna blanket is also an editor favorite, and you can read our review of the HigherDOSE Infrared Sauna Blanket.
Pro tip: As an athlete, Oyeneyin has to prioritize her recovery, and this blanket is a great way to do so. She says, "It's really great after a workout, and it just helps to calm my stress levels." Plus, the infrared therapy is "just so great for the skin." After sweating, it's important to wash your face and hydrate your skin.
Tunde Oyeneyin's Morning Routine Must Have: Optimum Nutrition 100% Plant Based Protein Powder
When we were talking about recovery, Oyeneyin emphasized the importance of properly fueling her body, which includes the addition of the Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Plant Based Protein Powder ($35) in her daily routine. She notes, "I made the switch to plant protein a few months ago. I'm not actually a vegan, I just really enjoy that with Optimum Nutrition's Plant Protein, I can get 24 grams of protein from vegetables . . . If you're going to push yourself to the max in a workout for 30, 45, 60 minutes, then don't do yourself a disservice. Make sure that you're properly fueling your body afterwards . . . I am very much a creature of habit when it comes to not just my workout but also my recovery. Again, I prefer to work out in the morning. I lift in the morning and then I run in the evening, and I've always got my cup ready. Sometimes there's milk in there, sometimes there's water in there, sometimes I've got a smoothie ready and it's loaded with my Optimum Nutrition."
Pro tip: That afforementioned smoothie usually consists of "blueberry, banana, almond milk, spinach, creamy vanilla protein powder, and a green powder or some type of power greens mix. I'd say that's like my basic one." She also has a great protein pancake recipe, which of course we scored for you. She combines half a banana, 1 scoop Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Plant Based Protein Powder in Creamy Vanilla, 1 teaspoon of baking powder, a quarter cup of water, half a teaspoon of cinnamon, and a third of a cup of egg whites into a blender, and then uses that batter to make pancakes. Yum!
Tunde Oyeneyin's Sleep Must Have: The Peloton App
As a Peloton instructor, we were delighted to hear that Oyeneyin actually uses the The Peloton App ($13 a month) on a regular basis. She loves to use the sleep meditations available on the platform, and says "I lie in bed when I'm finally able to shut my brain off and close the email, and I put on the voice of one of my friends. And it usually helps to do the trick. Ross Rayburn, I probably take his sleep meditation class the most. And it's funny because he's a good friend of mine, and I've told him this, so I mean, he might punch me for saying this here. If we're out for drinks or out to dinner, oftentimes my body almost starts to drift off to sleep."
Pro tip: If you're looking to try out a sleep meditation, the Peloton App has plenty of options to try, that are as short as just five minutes. Our editors have tried these meditations, and can confirm they work wonders.
Tunde Oyeneyin's Sneaker Must Have: Nike Free Metcon 4 Training Shoes
As an athlete, we place extra importance on Oyeneyin's sneaker recommendations, and she did not disappoint. The Nike Free Metcon 4 Training Shoes ($120) are great for gym sessions and weightlifting. "It's really important that you have a flat surface when you're lifting weights. If you use a shoe that's got a lot of cushion it's hard to keep your balance and keep your core working for you, efficiently for you. And so I'm either barefoot or I've got my Nike Metcon 4s on." Consider us sold.
Pro tip: Not only are these shoes effective, they look good too! Oyeneyin notes, "what I love about the Nike Metcon 4 are not only are they efficient, but honey, they're stylish, because it's not always the case. And so I'm happy that in 2023 we've got some really good efficient and stylish training shoes out there, which is Nike."
