Yumi Lee, celebrity trainer and co-owner of Reebok CrossFit Lab, offers a smart and easy-to-adopt either-or strategy when it comes to kick-starting your metabolism first thing in the morning. "Either start off with a good breakfast or a good workout," she says. "If you're going to work out within an hour of waking up, then don't eat. But if you can't work out within an hour of waking up, then eat. Either your workout or eating a healthy breakfast is going to jump-start your metabolism."
If you're the get-up-and-go type who likes to sweat in the morning, Yumi suggests to skipping out on any food before your workout. However, if you're one of those people who needs a little something in their stomach before a workout session, Yumi says that's also fine, but not to overdo it with a big breakfast. "If you can burn off what's in store from the day before, then you're better off than just burning off what you ate for breakfast," she says. For those who like to fuel up before working out, Yumi suggests something light like a small bowl or oatmeal or protein shake.
