Lewis Capaldi first got vulnerable about his experience with Tourette syndrome, as well as hypochondria, in his 2023 Netflix documentary "How I'm Feeling Now." His experience with minor tics began in childhood but became "out of control" as he got older, he says in the documentary.
At first it was confusing not knowing what he was going through. But when the singer was finally diagnosed, he felt a sense of relief, especially being able to tell others what was going on with him. "I got told I had Tourette's a week ago. Know how many people I've told I have Tourette's since then? It's outrageous. People think I'm bragging," Capaldi says. "It's just good to like [say], 'I've got this thing by the way. This is what it makes me do.' Do you know what I mean?"
Since revealing his diagnosis, the singer has kept his fans informed about the effects of tics on his body. While performing his closing song "Someone You Loved" in Frankfurt, Germany earlier in 2023, the musician suffered a flare-up of his condition. As he struggled through the bridge and the final chorus, his fans assisted him.
Capaldi most recently took a two-year break from performing due to complications like these. But the singer made a surprise appearance at Glastonbery festival in June announcing his return. "My name is Lewis Capaldi and I'm fucking back, baby."
