Becky G and J Balvin Dish on Their Music, Recent Tour, and Everything in Between

Becky G and J Balvin are Latin pop culture sensations. She's an 18-year-old singer, CoverGirl, and actress (Valentina on Empire and soon-to-be Yellow Ranger on the Power Rangers reboot). He's a 30-year-old reggaeton star and the Latin American Music Awards new artist of the year winner. And together, they went on the La Familia Presents Tour this Fall. We caught up with them while they were on the road to chat about everything from tour life to their exciting new projects. Catching Up With J Balvin

POPSUGAR: What motivates you at such an exciting time in your career?

J Balvin: My biggest motivation [is] definitely my dreams, I want to make history and be a legend in the music industry! And also be able to inspire others to go after their own dreams.

PS: Who in the industry do you want to collaborate with most?

JB: I have so many artists in mind . . . but my top three are Justin Bieber, Rihanna and Drake! This would be another dream come true!

PS: What has been the most shocking moment of your career so far?

JB: You know I'm the kind of person that lives in the present. That being said, every new moment in my career is shocking for me — an award that I've never won, a nomination, a tour, seeing the audience reaction when I perform.

PS: We love your good morning videos on Instagram. What inspired you to start doing them?

JB: Honestly, this came in a very spontaneous way. One day I was sipping on a beverage, and I made the tasting sound and it stuck with me. So the next morning I was drinking my morning coffee and saying hello to my fans via video and that sound came out again and people loved it!

PS: What did you bring on tour with you to remind you of home and your family?

JB: I always have my family, home, and loved ones in my heart! And nowadays technology makes everything much easier, because they are just a phone call away. So I must say that my phone is essential for me to keep in touch with my familia during tour days.

PS: What’s your favorite song to perform?

Becky G: "Lovin So Hard" and "Shower" are my two favorite songs, because the fans sing every word!

PS: Do you have any preshow rituals?

BG: Before we step onto the stage, I say a prayer with my whole crew. We pray for a good show, that all of us perform safely and remember our lyrics!

PS: You're on Empire now. What’s the biggest lesson portraying Valentina has taught you?

BG: Learning how to disconnect from who you are and connecting with the character was the biggest lesson I learned. You have to think differently, feel differently, and even talk differently. I'm not Becky G when I'm acting, and it’s so much fun.

PS: What did you learn from acting that also translated into your tour?

BG: Patience with yourself is everything! You don't get it right on every take. Just like every show may not be amazing because it’s long hours and exhausting. The most important thing is simply trying your best.

PS: Tell us a bit about what inspired your new album.

BG: Life in general is what inspires me. I write music about anything and everything I feel, see, or hear. [The new album] is more pop leaning, with an urban and Latin twist.
