Brock Turner Released From Prison Early
Brock Turner Is Getting Out of Prison After Just 3 Months and People Are Beyond Outraged
Brock Turner, the former Stanford swimmer who was found guilty of sexually assaulting an unconscious woman and received a controversial sentence of six months in county jail, was released early. After serving just half of his sentence, Turner walked free on Sept. 2, reports the Los Angeles Times. The reason for early releases is often good behavior.

The victim in this case wrote a powerful statement addressing the court that went viral in June, bringing national attention to the California case. She remained anonymous, penning another essay explaining why her anonymity allowed her to speak for all sexually assaulted women, but her story became a stark demonstration of the failures within our criminal justice system.
After Judge Aaron Persky sentenced Turner to six months, people were outraged, including lawmakers. The Santa Clara district attorney, Jeff Rosen — whose office prosecuted the case — wrote Assembly Bill 2888 to ensure Turner's lenient sentencing would never happen again by imposing mandatory jail time minimums for perpetrators when a victim is unconscious or intoxicated. The bill passed in late August, but has yet to be signed into law by California Governor Jerry Brown.
Many lawmakers have also campaigned to have Judge Persky recused. Michele Dunbar, who has vocally called for Persky to resign, spoke to The Mercury News after Assembly Bill 2888 passed, saying, "We shouldn't reward rapists just because they didn't use force." As of Aug. 26, Persky has removed himself from presiding over all criminal cases; he will only serve on civil cases.
Below, you can see how people responded to Turner's early release on Twitter. Since Turner was a swimmer at Stanford, he's also being compared to Ryan Lochte, who made headlines recently for lying about being robbed during the Olympics. Turner's father also notoriously wrote in a letter to the court that Turner had "lost his appetite" for his favorite food, a ribeye steak, which many are still referencing.
There was stuff in my fridge when Brock Turner went to jail that's still there.

Brock Turner is a reminder that the system works against me. He's a reminder that I have to hold my keys like a weapon when I go out.
