California's Kamala Harris Just Made History by Breaking All Kinds of Race Barriers

With election stress at an all-time high, there's a silver lining among the madness: California Attorney General Kamala Harris — who is black and Indian-American — was elected California's newest US senator. She defeated her Democratic opponent Representative Loretta Sanchez and will replace retiring Senator Barbara Boxer.

This momentous win broke a handful of barriers — for one, Harris's victory makes her the second black woman and first South Asian-American to serve in the Senate. In addition, she is the first black woman to represent California in the Senate and the first black female senator in two decades.
