Richard Gere's Comments on Trump's Travel Ban

Richard Gere Perfectly Summed Up One of the Biggest Issues With Trump's Travel Ban

Following the recent decision to uphold the block on Donald Trump's travel ban by a US appeals court, people continue to share their opinions on the contentious executive order. Richard Gere is the latest public figure to offer his thoughts on the POTUS's recent actions and specifically his treatment of refugees.

After a screening of The Dinner at the Berlin International Film Festival last Friday, the actor spoke at a news conference to spread a message of doing away with hostility and divisiveness. Gere explained to the gathered media how Trump's "biggest crime" is "conflating two words: refugee and terrorist," according to Variety.

He described how these two terms have very different definitions, although Trump tends to treat them as one singular word. "A refugee is someone who seeks refuge; it is someone we need to help," Gere said. "The number of hate crimes in the US went up enormously when Donald Trump began running for president. There are leaders who spread fear. It's happening here, too."

Gere ended the media gathering with a powerful note on inclusivity. "We need to be more careful how we talk to each other. We are all in this together. We are all human beings, and we have to live together on this little planet," he said.
