There is cause for celebration in the Android universe today. An alleged leaked photo of the Nexus 9, Google's first new tablet in years, was shared by upleaks on Twitter this morning. Android Police claims that the new 8.9-inch tablet's code name is Volantis, and it will be made by HTC.

Android Police also stumbled upon a leaked image of the new tablet's specs, which mentions an aluminum zero-gap construction with tapered sides. The leaked image shows that the rear won't be an aluminum back but rather the soft, velvety, plastic-like backing of previous Nexus tablets.

The rumored specs:

  • 8.9-inch display at 281 ppi
  • 2 GB RAM
  • 16 or 32 GB internal storage
  • 418g or 427g with LTE
  • 3MP front, 8MP with optical image stabilization rear cameras

In terms of technical details, the Nexus 9 is somewhere between the iPad Mini and iPad Air. Less pixel density and slightly larger than the iPad Mini with Retina, but better resolution and slightly smaller than the iPad Air. The Nexus rear camera is better than the iPad's 5MP rear camera across the board.
