Everett Collection

With their secretive ways, strange beliefs, and conspiracies, it's no wonder pop culture has a bit of a fascination with cults. In both fiction and the real world, these groups and their leaders are often the center of major scandals and even tragedies. If you're looking for a new true-crime story or an eerie, compelling fictional series, these TV shows about cults are for you.

In these shows, you can uncover the secret histories of some of the most infamous real-life cults, from famous groups you've probably heard of in history books to some of the most recent groups to hit the news, like NXIVM. Some of these series are led by people who experienced these groups firsthand, like Leah Remini's series "Scientology and the Aftermath." Or if fiction is more your speed, there are shows like HBO's "The Idol," which creates its own fictional star-studded cult.

Sam Levinson, who created "The Idol" with The Weeknd (née Abel Tesfaye), spoke to W magazine in May 2023 about how the idea about a cult-centered show came to be. "Abel came to us with a pitch. He said something that I'll always remember: 'If I wanted to start a cult, I could,'" Levinson said. "What he meant is that his fans were so loyal and devoted that they would follow him anywhere." That was the "germ" of the idea.

"Desperately Seeking Soulmate: Escaping Twin Flames Universe"

This Prime Video docuseries follows an organization called Twin Flames Universe, which is very much still active — and its members are only just starting to come forward about the reality of what's going on. The alleged cult promises to help members find their twin flames, which are essentially described as the other half of their souls, but it also brands itself as a self-help organization. The group's founders, Jeff and Shaleia Ayan, have been accused of manipulative tactics such as coercing followers into pursuing exes who have placed restraining orders on them and much more. They have denied that their organization is a cult — though some followers disagree.

06

"Wild Wild Country"

The Netflix docuseries traces the Rajneeshpuram movement, a town in Oregon entirely settled by followers of the controversial guru Rajneesh. In the 1980s, conflicts erupted between the cult and the surrounding community (as well as power struggles within the cult itself), culminating in a series of crimes and even a massive bioterror attack.

07

"Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief"

The Emmy-winning documentary investigates the history of Scientology, its founder, and its exploitations. Over the course of two hours, the filmmakers interview former members to learn how and why they joined (and left), reveal some of the true histories behind the organization's founding and uncover allegations of misconduct, abuse, blackmail, and exploitation that former members say are par for the course in the secretive group.

Leah Remini is among the most recognizable celebrities to leave Scientology, and she's focused much of her efforts in the years since on uncovering what really happens in that secretive organization.
