Liam Hemsworth Has Inspired a Handful of Miley Cyrus's Songs

During an interview on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in October 2013, Miley told the host that her whole Bangerz album is a reflection of her relationship with Liam. "It says [a lot] that [it starts] with 'Adore You' and ends with 'Someone Else' . . . I think I knew more intuitively where my life was going than I actually thought I did at the time."

Even though Miley didn't write this track, the lyrics clearly reflect her affections towards Liam.

Another hit widely speculated to be about Liam is "Wrecking Ball." She may not have written this song either, but she seemingly confirmed it was about him during an expletive-filled rant at one of her concerts shortly after they called off their engagement in 2014. "And every time you get in your car, you're going to hear my f*cking song on the f*cking radio, you piece of sh*t," she said. "Enjoy hearing this song for the rest of your life."

This track was inspired by the difficulties in their relationship. "I wrote it while I was working on Valentine's Day — emotionally it was such a hard time," Miley told Fashion magazine. "It is about needing to leave someone but not really wanting to completely cut yourself off from the relationship. It's a time when you want to leave but you can't. It's also about moving on."

Miley talked about her decision to write "Malibu" about Liam in an interview with Billboard in May. "They're going to talk about me if I come out of a restaurant with Liam. So why not put the power back in my relationship and say, 'This is how I feel?'" she said. Miley also explained the deeper meaning behind the lyrics, telling Carson Daly, "It's definitely about love. If that's how it is, that's what it is, but it's saying, 'You brought me here and I'm happy that you did.' Next, 'cuz now I'm as free as birds catchin' the wind.'"

The inspiration behind this ballad also seems to be Liam. Even though Miley hasn't confirmed that the track is about him, the singer appears to reference their relationship when she sings, "I have your heart / I don't even need a ring" and "Like the grass / I've watched us grow / I've heard you reap only what you'll sow."

While the singer hasn't confirmed (or denied) who "Week Without You" is about, there are some obvious clues that it's about her breakup with Liam in 2013. Not only does she talk about "kissing other dudes" — Miley famously dated Patrick Schwarzenegger after calling off her engagement to Liam — but she also details not being comfortable in her own skin during their relationship. Miley had recently talked about how they changed so much after their breakup in 2013 and had to "refall for each other."

Even though Miley hasn't disclosed who the song is about, the lyrics are very similar to her heartfelt birthday tribute to Liam from January 2019, in which she talked about how the Australian actor has been her support system during tough times.

After separating from Liam in August 2019, the singer dropped this emotional breakup song. The lyrics seem to reference their longtime romance with lyrics like, "Move on, we're not 17 / I'm not who I used to be."

The lyrics to "Midnight Sky" seem to chronologize her dating life after splitting from ex-husband Liam Hemsworth in October 2019. In the first chorus, she sings, "See my lips on her mouth, everybody's talkin' now, baby," alluding to her short-lived romance with The Hills star Kaitlynn Carter. In another chorus she sings, "See his hands 'round my waist, thought you'd never be replaced, baby," which seemingly references her 10-month romance with Cody Simpson.

During an interview with Howard Stern in December 2020, Miley revealed that her "I don't even miss you" lyric in the song was about Liam "in that minute" she wrote it. "Sometimes you miss people more than others, and sometimes, things get easier," she said. "Time kind of heals all, but that was at a time where I felt really strong. And then some days I don't."

The ballad seems to reference Miley and Liam's marriage and eventual divorce as she sings, "Flowers in hand, waiting for me / Every word in poetry / Won't call me by name, only 'baby' / The more that you give, the less that I need." Although, some fans theorize the song could also be about her short-lived relationship with Kaitlynn Carter.
